Hmmcast #6: New blog design tips, Xbox 360 music, HD-DVDs

Hmmcast — by TDavid @ 2:27 pm PST

Argh, another two-taker this week and I screwed up a Spider-man quote “becomes” instead of “comes” at the very beginning. I sure hope Spidey doesn’t mind. At the very end of the Hmmcast I leave a somewhat cryptic comment about the whole Google being sued as source of KP.

Just so I’m not misunderstood on something I feel very seriously about and to learn more about my opinion against confusing KP with children having access to legal adult content (because their parents aren’t doing anything) — which happens constantly and not accidentally — see these posts: Adult sites won’t go quietly into the night, The Child Protection act is a cover story and Freedom under assault: 2257, porn and politics. The lawsuit against Google is crazy if it really, seriously is alleging that Google is profiting from KP. Disclaimer: I own GOOG stock.

Rank and file
This isn’t part of the Hmmcast — consider it bonus coverage in the blog part — but I decided to look at the Libsyn listener numbers and rank the first few podcasts by number of listens and time. Here’s how they rank as of this writing:

1. (238) Hmmcast #3 8:32
2. (176) Hmmcast #5 11:41
3. (143) Hmmcast #1 7:29
4. (128) Hmmcast #2 9:43
5. (109) Hmmcast #4 8:59

The most listened to program unsurprisingly was the one after I went on a podcast submission spree. I suspect some (most?) of those numbers were increased by the sites that moderate the podcasts before listening to them.

The vast majority of downloads are coming through iTunes according to libsyn which indicates being listed in iTunes is important, although Feedburner only shows the subscriber breakdown as 25% iTunes. So while many listeners might download and listen through iTunes searches, not as many actually subscribe through iTunes. I’m sharing these numbers as part of the discovery process.

For newer readers, I’m not brand new to podcasting. In fact, our webmaster cookbook podcast was among the first batch of podcasts on the web (September/October 2004). I also have been doing a monthly podcast the last Thursday of the month called the Learning Lounge for over a year and a half now. Hmmcast is actually the third regularly scheduled podcast. As is the case Hmm wasn’t my first regular blog either.

Hmmcast #5: Da Vinci Code Week

Hmmcast — by TDavid @ 2:30 pm PST

The 5th Hmmcast crests the 10 minute mark but in the name of sharing (and shilling for) some more comments. Includes Hmm-worthy comments by regular readers and a Da Vinci book author who has been sued by the Da Vinci Code publisher Random House. This author claims he was plagiarized by Dan Brown and in the comments the author plagiarizes me (no, not really).

This also includes a screwed-up spoken cliche: “diamond in the rubble” — what’s that? Must be some Flinstones on the brain since we’ve been working our way through the first season DVD. Done in a single take.

Hmmcast #3: Calendars, academics, hybrids and butt equations

Hmmcast, blogs and podcasting — by TDavid @ 12:53 pm PST

Have to listen to this week’s Hmmcast to find out the biggest news of the week and yes, it’s a surprise (in our household, psyche). Meanwhile, if you missed this week’s Hmm-worthy posts and comments, just hit them below.

According to Libsyn stats, 121 people have checked out the first Hmmcast and 105 last week so far. Feedburner claims only 8 have subscribed to the Hmmcast feed. Does that mean Hmmcast #3 won’t top 100 listeners this week? The suspense is killing me, it’s like an episode of Twilight Zone mashed up with Perry Mason and The X-Files.

How will readers know if I’m talking about them or not? The only way is to scroll down and listen. Alright, enough flexing, time to pump the metal. The number in the parenthesis after each link is the number of comments received at the time the podcast was recorded.

Hmmcast, blogs and podcasting — by TDavid @ 1:46 pm PST

In light of last week’s Hmmcast feedback saying the length wasn’t too big a deal, I didn’t try to get five minutes or under. This week’s Hmmcast was done in a single take, complete with umms and ahhs and beamed straight from my brain to mouth to microphone, for better or worse.
