- Here we blow again: the embarassing IE7 launch (2) [oct 19]
“IE7’s crashed once on me since RC1, with Firefox 1.5 and beyond, it’s pretty much something that happens weekly. With the way I browse, it’s a huge annoyance to lose dozens of tabs that I had open and try to remember what I had and hadn’t seen. It’s good that there’s an extension for 1.5.x to save tabs, and that 2.0 will have it built in, but I much prefered the 1.0.x days when I could just open and open and open them, leave them open for days on end before getting through them, and not have to wonder with each new tab, “Is this going to be the one that crashes them all?””

“Mary Jo is independent, like most of the ZDNet bloggers. She truly has created her own operation, and we are lucky enough to have reached a deal for her to blog exclusively on ZDNet — but you’ll be seeing more of her in many places, I’m sure. At ZDNet we really embrace the idea of independent journalist/bloggers, and we seek out the best to partner with us. The model is not terribly unlike TV networks working with stars to make hit shows. James Gandolfini isn’t an employee of HBO, but he’s a big reason why I watch that network.”
– Comment by Stephen Howard-Sarin — September 22, 2006 @ 7:17 am
- DRM more appealing than piracy (5) [sep 21]
“I think iTunes is, while not acceptable, the least nasty DRM because even Apple tells you how to circumvent their DRM to create MP3s. MS et all, they want to stop that practice entirely. I have occasionally, heard the lower quality iTunes version, and maybe it is spoiled with all Q7 ogg, but I just can’t take the bad quality. :-D”
– Comment by Kevin — September 21, 2006 @ 12:19 pm
“I contend that the moment they actually make it “legal” for someone to buy a CD and rip it to their own MP3 player they will see the piracy levels drop. The fact that they are making something illegal that virtually everyone thinks they should be able to do means that people just can’t be assed with the difference between that and going the step further to pirate a song completly.”
– Comment by iiq374 — September 21, 2006 @ 4:17 pm
“I asked my dad, aunt and wife last night if they cared one whit about DRM. In near unison, “No.” Michelle knew what it was. Dad didn’t have a clue although he listens to music through iTunes all the time. My Aunt quickly figured out it wasn’t anything she would object to either.”

This is the longest Hmmcast to date. Would like to say 15 minutes is the max that any episode will ever be, but it’s starting to grow a bit. At the end, I spend a couple bonus minutes talking about some of the challenges of adding a video component. I’m definitely starting to get a little frustrated with the time it takes to put together a decent video presentation. I realize I haven’t shared what I’ve done so far, but that’s for a good reason: I don’t think the quality is very good. I remember reading that rocketboom takes a day to write, produce and shoot and while I’m not trying for anything as detailed and involved as Rocketboom, it’s still taking hours instead of minutes to get this done and unfortunately I don’t have hours for this project, only minutes.
I need to find or create a system that will let me do the video portion in less than an hour. That’s the whole process from start to finish. That might seem like plenty of time but a couple minutes of video take at least 15 minutes to shoot when you talk rehearse, shoot and reshooting, as necessary. None of this includes laying out the transitions, the text and virtual or real backgrounds. Then there’s the compression phase and finally uploading to the server and/or video sharing sites.
I might have to opt for sort of a mini, quick Hmmcast optimized for video that is like no more than 2-5 minutes rather than try to do the whole thing or maybe consider video only once a month or something. I haven’t figured out the best way yet. If anybody reading happens to be an experienced videoblogger and can share some good links or advice in the comments below, I’m all eyes and ears.

Some of my friends may think I’m a fanatical germophobe, but I still say it doesn’t do much good to wash your hands, if you then proceed to grab the door handle or knob (if there is one) on your way out, since it’s probably been touched by dozens or even hundreds of people who didn’t wash their hands.”

“What’s up with sinks where the spigots are so far back you have to rub the back of the sink bowl when you wash? Here’s this 18 inch diameter sink and he freaking water is pouring out an inch from the edge. What’s the point? Same with water fountains, which I rarely use. “I have terrible grammar. I think so anyways and my English teachers have all told me so throughout my education. But I do have a pet peeve with spelling. Yet, if I make a mistake, I correct it and call myself an idiot because that was my own fat-fingering. I think that whether or not people do so is their own perogative. If you want to type with bad spelling, who the heck cares. It’s a blog for crying out loud, not a dissertation.”
– Comment by darkmoon — August 23, 2006 @ 3:47 pm
“Yeah, having terrible grammar has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the success of a blog. Look at me, I’m french, and I can barely type 10 words without doing a mistake.. (Maybe I’m exagerating a bit).. but I still generate more then 100k page views per month and get some link love from all around the place.. People don’t care about the way you write. If you give them something interesting to look at, they’ll come back over and over again.”
