Tablet PC downgrading |
Warner writes about screen resolutions in newer Tablet PCs:
I’m a bit concerned that what we have seen predominantly in new Tablet PC releases this year have all come with lower res screens. This is one of many preference and trade off issues that potential Tablet PC owners have to mull over when they are looking at a purchase.
I would like to see a higher resolution slate tablet from somebody. In fact, when I’m in the market again (when Vista certified machines are available), a higher screen resolution will be on the list of important features. Yes, higher resolutions means smaller on screen text, but I can blow up text in browers. I do that with Zinio by zooming in and it works great.
Another reason not to buy a new model Tablet PC. I bet the deal on a backchannel Toshiba Portege M200 would be a good one, just be very, very careful if buying used (again not something I’d recommend doing).
Now, if smaller screen size is in play, I like the resolution on the Sony PSP (480 x 272, 16.77 million colors, 16:9 widescreen) and I’m intrigued by this DualCor portable device jkontherun got some inside juice about recently. He said that resolution was 800×480 and the mock-up picture he showed — it was a mockup wasn’t it? — showed that Windows Tablet PC running on a smaller device could be very usable. I’d love to be able to use the PSP with tablet functionality. The Nintendo DS half-screen doesn’t cut it for writing, but I could see something like the PSP with cell phone functionality being that single hybrid dream device. Will DualCor be The One?

When I was in the market for a laptop, I checked out the gateway convertable at Best Buy. The screen resolution was exactly what turned me off. I ended up with my Dell and I’m quite pleased with it.
