Just bought a Gibson SG myself. It is as if I have moved up a notch since buying it. I would recommend it to anyone

I have also been playing guitar for over 20 years. I agree to start with the notes and chords before jumping into the more technical aspects. Its been a great experience and I do enjoy teaching newcomers.

Awesome input from both of you. My son has an acoustic guitar that he wants to learn how to play. He and his cousin (they are both 9) want to start a band. But neither can play an instrument. Heh. I've never thought of youtube and never heard of anything like Power Tab Editor. I learn the coolest stuff here!

I've been learning the guitar for over 30 years now and I agree that too much focus upon technical stuff like scales, when you are just starting out, can be very off putting. Better to learn a few riffs, licks and chords to tunes that you like. A patient teacher who will show you without bombarding you with technical stuff is a godsend - I'm currently loving all the good stuff you can find on youtube - there are some brilliant guitar teachers out there -

Thanks for the tip on the Gibson Newsletter -
