Why does the AMA consider pot a dangerous drug? |
It’s about time government gives up the fight against marijuana. Long time readers of this blog know my position on legalization of marijuana: I’m for taxation and regulation, period.
I’m also for taxing and regulating online gambling. I see both these as a matter of economics and destiny. The government could take the money from this and help pay down our mounting debts. I want there to be some kind of future where America is not completely poverty-stricken. If you think these concerns are too premature, do some research on the subject.
America being bankrupted won’t happen in my lifetime, even if Republicans are in office for the rest of my years, but I’m looking for generations beyond. We have to make some sort of economic changes today, now, soon. Even if some changes are radical.
There are a lot worse things in the world to be focusing energy and resources on than chronic.
At least 11 states have figured out that pot, at least for medicinal purposes, could be helpful. Why are we telling the sick and infirm what they can take for pain? For that matter, why are we telling people in the privacy and safety of their homes that they can’t break out a bowl and light up?
BOOMj posts that Calfornia courts ruled that employers can fire workers who use medical marijuana with legal doctor approval. Is it just me who thinks this is wrong? Meanwhile, the American Medical Association is still labeling pot a "tightly controlled and dangerous drug that should not be legalized until more research is done."
Please.
Pot is dangerous how? I’m not talking the obvious dangerous like driving a motor vehicle stoned, which is stupid and should be prosecuted like DUI. I’m talking what the drug actually does to users. It makes them hungry and mellow. When was the last time you heard some maniac went on a serial killing spree stoned?
My wife has been in pain since being hit by a car in a crosswalk on November 2003. Surgery helped her for a little while, but the winter months really bother her. She’s looking at all sorts of options to help her get past the pain. I see that Washington is one of the 11 states (Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.) where medical marijuana use is allowed with doctor’s approval. I don’t know if my wife would be for smoking pot if it helped her because she has asthma, but I’m saddened seeing her live in pain.
Did this post make you go hmm?

Taxing and regulating may work for gambling but not for marijuana. Marijuana is easy to grow and non-addictive unlike alcohol or tobacco which makes huge revenue greatly due to those factors only. There would be very little money in legalization, regulation, or decriminalization for the government. Perhaps save some on prison numbers. Sure if I could buy top quality herb from the local convenience for a cheap price I would. The price of weed has not changed here for the 40 years I been smoking because its run by the people for the people - not government gluttony. I say no thanks I`ll take care of my own herbs thanks.
As for smoking with asthma try a vaporizer might help. I would not be suffering if there was something out there that may help. Don`t let others dictate how you feel.

They’re more concerned about all the cops and corrections officers that would be rendered useless in suburban areas.
The amount of young adults sitting in holding blocks waiting for bail around here because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time is unbelievable.
I would love to know the percentage of people on probation who are being punished for possession of under an ounce.

I believe it is just a small group of users who want this substance to be legalised.
Smoking pot can cause psychosis in people, it also can lead to hard drug use.
These in turn do not enhance a persons ability for productive work and do add to crime statistics through theft and violent assault.
I need not mention that the cost to the public health service in using these drugs is exorbitant, this includes alcohol and tobacco of course.
One thing I do agree with you though is the need to aggressively tax these things.

Republicans bankrupt the nation?!Are you stoned?Did you just see what Obama has spent while in office just under a month? It might be democrats that will loosen marijuana laws but they will do that so you don’t realize how much of your paycheck they are taking from you.It will also be the dems that tax it to death(think cigarettes). You will be a burden on the health care system they will force into effect and sell you on the fact that smoke is smoke and you should pay more taxes because of the strain you will put on the universal system.I want it legal also but not at the price we will all pay tohave it that way.Remember,it is republicans that are closer to libertarians, not democrats.unfortunately, too many republicans have forgot that while democrats will always believe the state should call the shots.

I absolutely agree with you. I was reading the economist the other day, and came across a VERY interesting article regarding the legalization of every drug in America. At first I was really taken back by it, I think the conservative christian side of me was shaken to the core!! But they made a great argument. They pretty much painted the picture that even though we can do something legally doesn’t mean that we do it. I mean really I could go and get meth very easily right now if I wanted. But common sense tells me not to. So when you legalize drugs, not only does the population tend to become more responsible when it comes to that substance, we save millions in tax dollars prosecuting drug dealers and imprisoning them, and we make millions of dollars taxing the substance.
And Noel come on now stop being the average angry nonsense sputtering republican. Try to not listen to so much Rush Limbaugh, regurgitating his thoughts doesn’t help America nor does it make you sound intelligent. Obviously Obama has to spend a lot of money to get us out of the problems that the republicans put us in, you can bad mouth him all you want, but at least the money is being put toward something promising that can further propel America into the future.
