How to run web applications outside browser using Prism |
Paul O’flaherty wants to run web apps from his desktop without having to launch the browser:
I’ll give a big hug to the first person to come up with a lightweight stand alone application that I can use to broadcast on services like UStream without having to fire up a resource hogging browser.
Paul, I’d suggest giving the open source Mozilla Labs project Prism (Windows) a try:
Prism … the web platform integrated into the desktop experience. Web developers don’t have to target it separately, because any application that can run in a modern standards-compliant web browser can run in Prism. Prism is built on Firefox, so it supports rich internet technologies like HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and <canvas> and runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
Using Prism is as easy as launching the program and typing in the URL to the application, giving it a name (see picture at top of post) and then double clicking the icon on your desktop like any other application.
To answer Paul’s second concern: memory consumption. Check out the windows task manager with Ustream.tv running through Prism vs. Firefox 2.0.0.12 with two windows and 17 open tabs.
For Mac users reading, check out a similar app called Fluid.

WOW Thanks TD
Looks like you’re getting the hug! ((Hugs))
I’m off to download Prism..
Thanks again mate

I have been using Prism for a few weeks now, streaming my Ustream Users Cmmunity Forum help channel and so far it has performed well. I am always looking for ways to do what I want without increasing the load on my CPU. So when I found Prism had to try it. When you have a need to just stream without any need to open up a plethora of other windows, a slower machine (and u need all the CPU u can get) or even a stream at the higher frame rates for quality purposes, Prism is an excellent tool. The only prob I had was getting Flash and Java linked to the program and as it turned out it was minor. so far I am impressed.
