I have an elite, and it worked without fault untill just over two days past it's one year warranty. since then i have fixed it myself and got it to work on too many occassions. it feels like an uphill struggle of fixes and breaks, on many occasions i have been tempted to buy another and then i remember i would be buying it off the company that has caused me all this hassle in the first place.

Every Xbox 360 will break......I have seen the 1st gens, 2nd, and & elites break. I have even seen the 360's with the extra heat sink break. I actually have made a decent profit by repairing the 3 light problem on 360's. I have dont about 20 of the repairs and have had only 3 come back with no fix in sight. The first immediate problem is the compact design and heat. Tight area and badass gpu = heat problem. This heat and "X" clamps used to clamp the heat sinks down is the major flaw. The motherboards get so how and the clamps are so tight the solder connection to the actually chips begins to come loose. This connection issue is only repairable by a new motherboard. The common fix was to install your own screws instead of the "X" clamps and apply new thermal paste. This worked great for alot of 360's I fixed. I noticed this will only work for sometime. Usually 6 months to 1 year after the 1st intial repair the xbox will return unfixable. You can try the fix again and again with no luck. The motherboard solder to the gpu chip has failed totally at this point. I have even fixed the systems, left them out of the case, & had an extra fan blowing straight on the motherboard. The xbox still broke after 1 month of play. It's just a shame to see such poor engineering from just a high level company. I'm a auto mechanic and I can figure it out. This is more of a rant than anything. I'm pissed off I spent the intial $700 when these things first came out!

I purchased 3 Xbox 360 in the past 12 months; we have received 2 with an E74 error and the other the ring of death after the warranty. I spoke to an attorney and he said if we can get at least 10,000 people with the same problem we can file a "Class Action Lawsuit for unfair and unlawful business practices" it almost appears as if these systems have been programmed to malfunction after a certain date. It may be a good idea to pull together and file a lawsuit against Bill Gates and company.

I feel your pain... I am about to be on my 3rd one. I bought #1 when the product first launched, got red rings of death in 2006, replaced with #2, and just 2 days ago, November 18, 2008, #2 came down with the red rings. Depending on the response from Xbox support, I may just buy a new Arcade for $199 (and get HDMI!)... thinking about Xbox, though, what a terrible product design - to be on #3 since launch is awful. In fact, my ORIGINAL Xbox is still working quite nicely and it is the only original I've had. I sure am glad I bought a PS3 the other day (just for Blu-Ray) - my confidence in Microsoft is completely shaken (and not stirred).
