How does Super Mario Galaxy look with component video cable on HDTV?
A friend asked me to check out how Super Mario Galaxy looks on an HDTV with a component cable connection to the Wii. In one word: TERRIBLE. Maybe I have something set wrong, but here’s the setup:
- React component cable for the Wii
- 40″ Samsung LCD HDTV
- Nintendo Wii + Super Mario Galaxy
I’ll shoot some comparative video of other Nintendo Wii titles and then compare to Super Mario Galaxy in a future Hmmcast. I don’t think I’ve ever complained about graphics in a popular title, but I’m very disappointed in what I’m seeing. At worst it’s like looking at an overcompressed JPEG, at best, it’s still noticeable.
I doublechecked in the Wii options that the TV Resolution was set to 480p (it’s worse at the default 480i, naturally) and it’s not nearly as sharp. Maybe I should have left it on the old analog TV. The Wii stuff looks good on there. Or maybe I’m spoiled by the 720p and 1080p PS3 and Xbox 360 titles.
Did this post make you go hmm?

interesting about the resolution. i haven’t tried my Wii on component at all - I don’t have a receiver on my 36″ sony, and it’s 2 component inputs are take by my sony DVD player and a HD cable box.
I think cables do make a difference- i have the same TV on another floor, but with monster component cables on a not too later model dvd player - and the quality is definitely much better. I’m not familiar with the component cable mentioned, but i wonder if better cables might make a difference?

I have mine running with official Nintendo cables and haven’t noticed any issues compared to other Wii titles.
It’s probably the 720p and 1080p exposure you’ve had lately.

It could be a faulty cable. I’ll get some video shot showing what I’m seeing. I think with the HD you’ll be able to see the stark difference.

I just purchased the game last night and played for about 2 hours. I have a 42″ LG LCD screen that’s 720p. I’m using component from the Wii and it looks great, crisp and clear. My only complaint is that the Wii is only 480p, and I can see the pixels clearly from my gamer chair. No normal system compressed visuals after they get out of the game, so if you see anything less than crisp graphics (even if you can see the pixels) then there is something wrong with your setup.
The only thing that’s compressed is the intro movie you see in Mario right after you walk a little bit, the one with the flying airships. Nintendo doesn’t normally do video (actually this might be the first time ever) and imho it’s compressed too much. Maybe Nintendo thinks everybody plays in SD or on a 27″ screen, but on 42″ I can see lots of MPEG style compression.
Despite, the game looks great and plays even better, without a doubt the best game on the Wii. The Gamecube had Resident Evil 4, and the Wii has Mario Galaxy, definitely a contender for game of the year.

It looks great on my 720p projector at 90″. US Wii + Nintendo component cables. I’m not seeing any weird JPEG artifacts…
