Getting suggestions from a third party site with Should Do This |
Recently I was thinking there haven’t been many exciting new sites/services to write about lately. Even TechCrunch that covers most new sites has been having more news-oriented coverage. I’m still signing up for new sites/services almost every day — on good days multiple sites — but a lot of what I’m seeing isn’t generating enough passion to reach for the keyboard. This morning one site did.

Should Do This allows people to leave suggestions for changes/additions for products, services, websites and companies (as well as persons, places or things) and vote on how likely the changes will be implemented. Should Do This offers earned points for offering OpenID as an option for registration but loses points for adding rel=NOFOLLOW to outgoing links. The sign-up process requires validating an email address.
After making at least one suggestion, you can see what suggestions you’ve made on a page or add that page to your website using some copy/paste JavaScript. There are voting elements similar to Jyte that are labeled “cheers.” You can leave comments about each suggestion. I didn’t test how far the conversation can go, but hopefully more than one comment is allowed.
I’m a fan of listening to your customers or in the case of sites like this blog, readers and visitors. That doesn’t mean we need to do everything that is suggested, but every serious suggestion needs to be considered and contemplated. A site like Should Do This makes it easy for webmasters to gather feedback transparently. A major concern of using a third party site like this is that it could be here today, gone tomorrow. I didn’t see any export option to take your suggestions with you which might be a suggestion for Should Do This.
The data and suggestions as of this writing seemed mostly worthwhile, but there are a few questionable entries like “your mom” (should quit calling???). If the data doesn’t become too contaminated, this could be a service to watch. I considered entering in MakeYouGoHmm but thought it might be a bit cheesy to submit a first party site to the list and also Hmm Labs already exists to explore different things we’re considering implementing here.
If any readers would like to see some changes/additions here please feel free to add that to the service and make one or more suggestions. I’m encouraging you to do so, if you like. Or, if you’d rather, you’re welcome to use the comments/trackback area to make suggestions for additions/changes at the site.
