Yahoo to discontinue Musicmatch for Yahoo Music Jukebox

news, music — by TDavid @ 6:27 pm PST

YHOO Stock: Musicmatch getting axed for Yahoo MusicAs someone who has tried both Musicmatch and Yahoo Music (disclaimer: I own Yahoo stock) and unlike choosing Flickr over Yahoo Photos I think they are axing the wrong service here.

PC World: Yahoo Nixes Musicmatch Jukebox

Yahoo says to continue using the subscription services users will need to use a migration assistant app to move to the Yahoo Music Jukebox program … When you do, the Yahoo Music Unlimited service will replace Musicmatch On Demand.

What’s next? Yahoo MyWeb or Del.icio.us? Whether or not this folding into one strategy is a good idea time will tell. It certainly makes things less confusing but some users who liked one service over another are feeling like jilted lovers. Why then did Yahoo pay to acquire? Was it just to acquire new users? New technology that they wouldn’t use? To hire the employees (if any?) from Musicmatch?

Won’t matter much because neither Y! Music or Musicmatch put a dent in iTunes.

Did this post make you go hmm?

  1. Howdy,

I got rid of Yahoo’s “Upgrade” promo stall screen by renaming “C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\offers.mmc” to “Offersmmc.OFF”

    ’seems to work.

  2. I’ve had Musicmatch for years and YAHOO got rid of every feature I PAID FOR !!! And they are stopping web support for existing Musicmatch to FORCE YOU INTO USING THEIR PROGRAM!!!! No more super tagging, volume leveling, capturing audio from external sources(I copied my tapes to MP3).
The new Yahoo Musicmatch is nothing more than a MUSIC STORE!!! At least they could keep the existing program or put the existing features into the new program. And, you can’t even update or run the program unless you have Internet Explorer 6. I was using Musicmatch on my laptop with limited hard drive space that I want for storing MUSIC & USEFULL Programs. Thats why my laptop uses Firefox that runs faster and is 5.8M instead of over 120M like IE 6.
It looks like I will be using Winamp from now on since Yahoo Musicmatch has discontinued web support for the original Musicmatch !
