My wife tells me I’ve started the first step to “geeking out” my new bicycle by adding a $20 wireless speedometer. It’s not just a speedometer though, it tells the time (12 or 24 hour format), calories burned, mileage, trip tracking and more.

Wireless speedometer

I had some trouble installing it. So much that I needed to take to the local bike shop repair man to see what I did. He chuckled at my lame attempt to install it correctly and then showed me what I did wrong. You need to put the sensor on the bike fork and the magnet on the spoke so it passes close to the sensor. Doh!

If you ever travel this direction and enjoy bike trails, the Pierce County Foothills Trail runs from Sumner to South Prarie is fully paved and includes views like this one:

I started a new Google spreadsheet to keep track of our daily (hopefully) bike mileage.

  1. Glad to see you hitting the road, TD.

I ride a hybrid (of a mountain and a touring) bike, with road tires.

I’m not much for gadget paraphernalia to encumber my bike, but this looks like something I might actually buy, and the price is right. Thanks.

  2. hey man,
I bought the same speedometer as yours, but I cannot make the speedometer read as I am riding. I have aligned the magnet and the sensor correctly? But not sure what’s wrong. I wonder if I put the receiver on the handle bar within the reading range or not. I put it on the left side of the handle bar from rider’s view. And the sensor is also on the left fork too.
At some point, I get it reading, but only when I ride slowly. As I accelerate, the stupid meter goes back to zero.

    Please help :(

    Sincerely

  3. Hey, I guess I’m geeking out too! I bought one of these! and I couldn’t figure out how to install the sensor part either. I didn’t get it. I googled installation for the wirless speedometer, and found your site! :-) thank you! I’m off to attach the speedometer now. The pictures in teh manual book are kinda useless!
