Ode to fathers that blog III |
In 2005 I got this idea that it would be cool to run through my RSS reading list, mention and link to blogging fathers. I did it again in 2006 and as you are reading this even though we’re on a mini vacation of sorts, I’m doing it again. Ok, I’m cheating a bit by preparing most of this ahead of time, but the sentiment is still there.
8 fathers that blog were mentioned in 2005 and in 2006 there were 7 more in my RSS reading list. This year there are the fewest number yet but my reading list is substantially smaller than it has been the last two years and some of the fathers if they are in there have been a little more quiet. Here is my current RSS reading list [web, OPML]. Same criteria as the last two years, I’m trying to mention fathers that I haven’t mentioned specifically in 2005 or 2006.
Let’s meet this year’s list of father that blog III, the eye of the father edition (bonus Rocky III reference).
Kent Newsome at newsome.org
Kent stepped away from blogging at the tail end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007 for an extended blogging break but he’s returned and continues to rock and roll. He doesn’t write too much about his children but certainly mentions them here and there and you gotta love how Kent’s about page at his blog deal starts by mentioning his family.
Gerald Buckley at Gwhiz.wordpress.com
I’m not sure exactly what part of the country Gerald hails from but I remember him writing about how he removed his kids pictures from Flickr following the rather unfortunate Kathy Sierra incident:
Michelle and I talked about safety just the other day. It’s why my kids pictures are no longer in my Flickr account. I disagreed. But, they’re gone. That’s marriage. That’s parenting.
Gerald tends to focus on the Apple Mac side of the world which has been helpful to me because I still feel like an Apple newbie even though I bought my first Mac in 2004.
Shane at Thatedeguy.com
Shane became a father for the first time within the last two years. Ahh, those are special times indeed. I hope you took lots of video. We still watch the VHS tapes of our children when they were babies and they crack us up with the funny things they did as babies. The first steps, first words, so many special moments. Enjoy!
Shane covers different tech happenings, does the occasional review and remembers to insert himself in the story where appropriate like in this recent post where he talks about his Prosper experience. Perhaps more importantly on a day like today, he covered his feelings being a proud father around last Father’s day. His son is turning 1 year old this month. Happy birthday Connor!
Don Crowdis at dontoearth.blogspot.com
Don holds the distinguished honor of being the oldest father and blogger and possibly the only grandfather in my reading list. The first time I came across his post about how he wasn’t ready to die, I was hooked and reaching for the subscribe link.
I’m growing concerned that Don hasn’t updated since March 8 of 2007 with the title “I’m not dead” so hopefully he’ll write again soon to let us know he’s still ok. Sadly, some opportunistic spammers are abusing Don’s comments area.
Don tells a curious story of how his wife and daughter ended up at Niagra falls one day:
The coincidence is that my wife, who rarely travels due to her current medical condition, and my daughter, who lives far from here, both ended up at Niagara Falls on the same day, each completely unaware of the other, perhaps even watching the falls at the same time.
There is an eloquence and wisdom to Don’s posts that will keep me subscribed even if he only posts a couple times a year.
Are you a father that blogs in my reading list?
If I missed mentioning you then please accept my apologies. You can use the comments below to correct me. I’m a proud father of three teenage boys so I don’t miss opportunities to remind them in person and occasionally through this blog that I love them and am proud of them.
And to readers and other bloggers not in my reading list that are fathers I hope you have a very, very happy Father’s Day 2007.
Did this post make you go hmm?

Happy Father’s day TDavid!
Don’t forget our buddy Jeff Sandquist over at Microsoft’s Channel 9. He’s on sabbatical right about now with his daughter travelling cross country (in his Vette?)
Kids: Best way yet to invest your time…
PS: Hailing (as always) from an unusually soggy Tulsa, Oklahoma (where you and family are welcome any time!)
