Wii making too many update calls on the network when not turned on? |

I just went over to our Nintendo Wii and unplugged it. Why? Not behaving nicely with network resources. Speaking to the devices in our home (how is it in yours?) when they aren’t turned on, they should be in both power and network conserve mode. I don’t want to be reminded that they are plugged in.
Now take a look at this OpenDNS report for top domains yesterday across our local network yesterday — oh, and yes, I’ve finally started receiving daily stats from OpenDNS that make sense:

A game machine that we enjoy playing — and yet use only a few hours a week — shouldn’t make up 3 of the top 8 top domain slots for the day. Apparently the Wii needs to check if the weather has changed quite a bit. I can maybe understand the news part checking more often but geez, when it’s not turned on slow down on the updates already, Nintendo.
Being that del.icio.us is my bookmarking of choice at the moment that’s a sensible item on the list.
Google? I’m not even sure they deserve 4 of the top 8. I can understand Google Mail doing a lot of checking as I have that window open and active almost 24/7 but what’s the deal with sb.google.com (#6) and www.google.com (#7)? Toolbar queries at #8? No wonder they want that damn toolbar installed on every machine.
E.T. stop phoning home so much!
Did this post make you go hmm?
