Tolkien’s son finishes last Rings novel over 30 years after father’s death |

Over the weekend I purchased the presale for Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) Shadows of Angmar from Best Buy ($10 USD). The open beta for LOTRO starts this Friday March 30. I’ve participated in the closed beta and wrote about the experience over at VTOR. They are offering presale buyers a couple special ingame items and founder reduced pricing of $9.99/month or $199 for a lifetime membership. The same company who made Dungeons & Dragons Online, Turbine, is responsible for LOTRO. Midway, which has made my favorite basketball game NBA Jam is also involved.
I haven’t read any of the Lord of the Rings books or seen the extremely popular movies, but the game interested me. This morning I learned a new Rings novel is coming out next month.
The author’s son Christopher, using his late father’s voluminous notes, has painstakingly completed the book, left unfinished by the author when he died in 1971. The work has taken the best part of three decades, and will signify the first “new” Tolkien book since The Silmarillion was published posthumously in 1977.
30+ years to complete the book? There must be some complicated nuances to close the chapter on this epic compendium. Any readers that are Tolkien fans and looking forward to the final Rings novel or this MMORPG?
Did this post make you go hmm?
