Family just got back from seeing Ghost Rider |

The previews for Ghost Rider have had me stoked for awhile and this afternoon our whole family watched the fiery skull and bones dude ride. At the official Ghost Rider Sony website, you can put in your zip code and find movie times in your area.
In Ghost Rider daredevil Johnny Bravo Blaze (played by Nicholas Cage) who was tricked into selling his soul to the devil when he was younger must be the devil’s right hand man in the future when the night goes down, chasing down the souls of evil. He transforms into this skeleton with leather, chains and a tricked out motorcycle to punish the evil living and dead.
As with other comic book characters like Spiderman, Ghost Rider has a love interest in a character played by Eva Mendes who appears with significant cleavage showing in just about every frame. There is a puzzling, unexplained part where she works as a news reporter and yet just seems to totally abandon her job to chase after Johnny Bravo Blaze. Then there is this weird caretaker dude with a killer low gutteral voice that also serves as the story narrator.
Without going into futher detail and spoiling the movie, the storyline is a mess, including the ending which screams sequel. I thought the movie was about as good as Hulk. If you’re a fan of comic book movies you might like this one which is better than Daredevil, but a long ways from being in the league of X-Men or Spiderman.

My whole family watched it and loved it! I gave it a solid B. Of course me and my oldest daughter love motorcycles so this was a pretty good movie on that account. That cycle from Hell was smokin! (LOL sorry couldn’t resist). I thought the love interest was a bit weak and contrived but remember, it is from a comic book.
I though Nicolas Cage did a pretty good job. That was Sam Elliott playing the caretaker, we just like him in general.
There has already been a lot of chatter about a sequel, look in the scifi.com news archives…
What was the weekend take?

Rotten Tomatoes says 44.5 million made so far. I can see that being enough to generate a sequel. I hear they are remaking Hulk because the Ang Lee version didn’t go over as well as they hoped.
I’m looking forward to Iron Man.

Years ago Nicolas Cage did a movie called Peggy Sue Got Married. At the time Nicolas said he got his inspiration from the old claymation character GUMBY. Ghost Rider, I believe Cage was trying to do his best Elvis impersonation. It was a good choice because Elvis would have made a good Ghost Rider. I thought the movie had a pretty good cast but just failed in story. It would have been nice if they got Jack Nicholson play the Devil instead of Peter Fonda. Fonda is a B actor but you know they used him because he was the Easy Rider dude.
Sam Elliot is always great but the role was just stupid *Slow down - spoiler ahead* Tell me this, why in the world did Sam’s character ride with Cage to the ghost town, just to leave him at the outskirts? It just didn’t make any sense. I guess the only reason to the director is that it looked cool for the two to ride together down that long stretch of highway. I think they weren’t going for plot but rather what looked cool.
It is the kind of empty plot you’d find in a comic book…excuse me…graphic novel. I cut these kind of movies a little slack because very few of them succeed in being really good. Ghost Rider was big on special effects and little on story. I go to these type of movies with little expectations. They got my money and they get a C-. I am being generous.

Johnny Bravo????
Was this intentional or just a case of slight confusion?
Johnny Bravo is the blonde haired macho wannabe cartoon character from Cartoon Network. Its Johnny Blaze.

[…] and the kids enjoyed that movie. I could take or leave the Ghost Rider movie itself (see Hmm Ghost Rider review) but I’ll admit the flaming skele on a cycle shots are cool cinematically. Related […]
