Why nofollow continues to be against the spirit of the web |
Download Hmmcast #60 mp4
See below, but I believe I’ve been fairly consistent in my abhorrence of nofollow being used. A Hmm search for nofollow yields some 29 times I’ve written about it. Today is the first time I’ve shot any video about it.
Past Hmm posts about the nofollow attribute
December 13, 2006: The FTC and somebody please give me something positive to write about Sony
September 28, 2005: Debating what is/isn’t spam in the comment sections
September 26, 2005: TypePad offers tip jar feature, still forcing rel=nofollow on all comments?
March 15, 2005: Disabling nofollow in Wordpress 1.5
Jan 22, 2005: Google responds to my nofollow concerns
Jan 19, 2005: Treating all commenters like spammers is a slippery slope
Jan 15, 2005: No Google juice for nofollow attribute, will this negatively impact legitimate comment activity?
Behind the Hmm
Notes for those curious about the making of Hmmcast #60.
A serious topic today which is a switch from the normal Hmmcast I’ve been creating. Also the first one that didn’t get published at the scheduled 4:20pm PST. Yes, the timestamp is a bit of a fib, so forgive me there. This was actually published just before 5pm PST.
The video itself was completed before 4:20 but like one of them last week, I was working on it as 4:20 approached. I didn’t even start shooting the video for this one until a few minutes after 3:00pm which as it turns out is too late unless I do zero editing. Just couldn’t resist doing a little editing. My hats off to the point, click, shoot and publish folks.
I could have substituted something quick and easy but I was feeling conversational today. I learned that the latest I can and should start working on the same day’s Hmmcast is 2pm PST. It’s logged and filed.
Did this post make you go hmm?

Damn man, well I guess I know where to get links! May the be peace be with you. You make some good points. Rel=”nofollow” can be overused… I understand both sides of the argument - I do use it myself but only because I do … well I can’t say too much. PEACE.
