Acoustic Zeppelin jamming Bluegrass-style

music — by TDavid @ 2:05 pm PST

Pickin on Zeppeling

Been thoroughly enjoying listening to Pickin’ on Zeppelin: A Tribute (affiliate) today which is also available on Zune. I was a huge fan of the unplugged movement awhile back where many famous songs were redone by the original artists. Not the case of Pickin which is all third party stuff working the fretboard (or violin) magic as it were, but it’s a very well done tribute that answers the question what would it sound like if the Charlie Daniels Band took on Zeppelin tunes.

Instruments used include: harps, banjos, fiddles (lots), harmonica, violins, acoustic guitars (of course) both 6 and 12 strings. Think I might have heard a bongo or two (Rock and Roll) in there somewhere, but not sure.

No singing, BTW, so don’t expect some wannabe Robert Plant to start wailing “Wayyyyy downnnnn insiiiide. Woman. Youuuuu. Neeed. LoooooooooooooVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEE!” Actually Whole Lotta Love isn’t even covered bluegrass-style on this CD, but you can see from the screenshot above what songs are, including my personal zep favorites: Stairway To Heaven, Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You, D’yer Maker, No Quarter, All My Love and Rock and Roll. There are so many great Zep songs, it’s kind of hard to pick and choose ones. I wonder if we’ll ever see Zep get together with Bonham’s son on the skins for a new album and tour. Hopefully someday before it’s too late. Maybe already, who knows.

100 greatest guitar solos
While talking music, it’s worth noting Guitar World magazine used a reader’s poll and their editors to put together a list of the greatest 100 guitar solos ever and number one was Jimmy Page on Stairway. My favorite guiltar solo is actually #5 by Jimi Hendrix in the Dylan cover All Along the Watchtower.

Create your own Guitar Hero tracks
Eagerly awaiting the USB adapter so I can play Guitar Hero II on the PS3. Others waiting might be interested in creating custom made Guitar Hero II tracks. Some of the acoustic versions of these Zep songs would be very difficult to reproduce on the Guitar Hero controller.

More acoustic covers worth checking out?
Do you enjoy listening to acoustic covers? Other good acoustic albums or collections of poplar songs I should check out? I prefer rock and roll tunes over other genres, but enjoy great guitar work in any genre really.

  1. TD, you named my favorite guitar solo, too, Jimi Hendrix’s cover of All Along the Watchtower. With apologies to Dylan, Hendrix took that song and made it his.

I got turned on to the Are You Experienced album when I was 13, in 1968, a year after it was released. Shows you how old I am (but I don’t look it). My room was a psychedelic shrine to Hendrix, and the Electric Ladyland album was my favorite.

Would you believe the great guitar-god, Jimi Hendrix, opened for the Monkees when he joined their tour in progress in 1967?

  2. Adam Sandler’s character was right in that movie Airheads when he said: “Hendrix was God, man.” Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads (RIP) good too. Never much cared for Yngwie Malmsteen speed demon on the fretboard. Jimmy Page is good too. Skynyrd’s Freebird solo is overrated.

What Hendrix did in that solo is incredible and is very difficult being reproduced by some great guitarists even today, some 40 years later using the same equipment.

Vince, if you like All Along the Watchtower, go seek out the live version by Shawn Lane who also has passed away. He does the best live Hendrix cover of Dylan’s cover version I’ve ever heard. Incredible guitar talents burn bright and fast, sadly.

  3. They used to say Clapton was God, too. I haven’t heard ‘Slowhand’ burn like he used to, he’s been in the mellow groove for a long time (not current with his music). I saw Eric and Carlos Santana together in ‘72 (?). They did separate sets, and then jammed together at the end. They were truly awesome, and that’s a word I don’t use often.

Hendrix will always be the God of the Electric Guitar for me. I truly believe his music inspired my imagination more than all the words of most of the authors we read in English Lit.

As long as there’re electromagnetic waves, Hendrix will be immortal.

  6. Guy’s amazing. A master, and his playing is incredibly fluid. I’ve been checking out some of his other stuff, truly awesome. Interested to see that he played with Black Oak Arkansas. They were very popular in northeast Florida in the early 70’s, before Shawn joined the band, though. I think I saw them (hey, it was the 70’s). Thanks, TD.
