Old, new, how often do you change your wallet?

customer adventures — by TDavid @ 11:42 am PST

old wallet, new wallet

Five years seems to be the magic number for my wallet wearing out. Only so many times in and out of the back pocket before it starts to fall apart. Usually the first thing to go are the plastic picture inserts. The text from my voter card has burned into the plastic. Talk about ironing with your wallet.

These personal wallet experiences left me surprised by the following story about a wallet that was returned to its rightful owner after 62 years.

USA Today: Man's wallet returned after 62 years

As medics helped him in the field, Heilwagen recalled pulling out his billfold to look at pictures. The next day, he was taken to a French hospital, where the shrapnel was removed. “They were getting ready to ship me out to another hospital, and I looked for my billfold, and it was gone.”

62 years later my wallet would look like something that came out of a pitbull’s fangs and amazingly Mr. Heilwagen “received it in very good order.” Are you kidding me? What was that wallet made out of?

Back to loading all my stuff from old wallet to new wallet. With the many digital gadgets I’ve bought over the years, the wallet hasn’t been replaced. Makes a good gift every five years or so. How long does your wallet last?

  1. I replace mine about the same frequency. I am picky though so I prefer to not get them as a gift. It does get annoying that the picture inserts seem to die first. I’m finding I seem to have more and more membership cards. Coffee clubs, 4 different grocery stores, assorted discount membership cards.

A few months ago I had some back pain. The Dr. asked me if I drive a lot. I said yes, I commute 40 miles each way every day. Then he asked me if I drive with my wallet in my pocket, and I did. He told me to not drive with it in my pocket. My back pain has since subsided.

  2. Every two years whether it needs it or not. Always as a gift by request.

    Happy New Year btw!

  3. Lestat - good tip on not sitting on it while driving. I’ll have to start putting mine in my jacket.

And right back atcha, Gerald, hope your holidays went well. Only two years, eh?

  4. Oh man, when it wears out and I too am picky… No gifts I have to find it myself, it has to be supple calf skin and has to have a separate little pull out covered in calfskin for my picture Ids.

Geez we sound like a bunch of women talking about their hand bags…

  5. lol FranciscoIV, but I wonder if women replace their purses more frequently than we replace our wallets.

  6. Lol, you guys are just too funny. Just to let you know you can’t compare women and their purses to men and their wallets, they’re nothing alike. We women have many purses therefore they don’t get replaced just swapped out and in periodically as we feel like it.

  7. T: Junk the wallet and use a metal business card case instead. You can buy one at any good stationary store and they are spring loaded, can usually hold about 10-12 cards, and one or two of them should handle most of your credit cards, ids, and maybe even money or change. Best of all: They don’t wear out, although the finish may wear down. There’s nothing like flipping one out of your pocket, hitting the button and having it flip open, ready for you to flick out a card.

Way more durable than a wallet, more environmentally resistant, and the size if fixed so it can’t balloon up like crazy. Nice, slim profile, way of the future.

  8. Tell me about it Kara. My wife seems to have quite a collection of them. I often wonder why the old ones get saved. It’s pretty rare I ever see them in use again, yet they take up space in the closet.
