Although we have six television sets including two HDTV (max resolution 1080i) in our home, we’ve been without TV service (cable, satellite, over the air) for almost 200 days. This has saved us hundreds of dollars in monthly subscription fees and has gotten me thinking about what type of video content I’d be willing to pay for.

Even though I don’t speak any language other than English fluently I totally groove on the YouTube clips being highlighted on the TV in Japan blog. It is my first third party resubscription in 2007 and the video below shows why:

Pac-Man is my most favorite classic video game of all time and I’ve covered videos of that yellow pill popping guy [Hmm search for pac-man] like a true Pac fan.

In order for me to resubscribe to TV, it would need to have creative content like the TV in Japan blog (resubscribed ) is highlighting. Maybe I’ve just become bored with American television? What’s on TV now that you can’t get online? And I don’t mean illegally. I don’t download TVs or movies illegally, we buy or stream them legally either online or in the store.

What TV shows and/or channels do you consider worth paying for? Which ones couldn’t you go without in your household?

  1. you highlighted your lack of tv. would you care to elaborate on how your family made that decision, how you handle sports, how you get your internet?

    thanks

  2. My wife craves CourtTV, Discovery Health and Oprah. I could do without, except for baseball and football.

  3. Hi db - Our internet at home is cable and DSL at both our offices. I listen to the Mariners on local terrestrial radio (when reception is good) and the NFL on Sirius satellite radio (we have two paid subscriptions there). Our three teenagers and my wife aren’t that interested in professional sports on TV. We have two Xbox Live accounts and two Xbox 360 that our two younger teens play on the TV. We recently added a PS3 and HDTV to our bedroom. Our oldest son has a computer and plays games and watches DVDs. All the TVs in our house are either hooked to a videogame system and/or DVD player.

We buy DVDs regularly and have a collection of about 500 DVDs. Last night we bought our first Blu-Ray movies which I’ll write about in a separate post.

There’s plenty of video available online, both created by others on sites like YouTube and offered by the networks directly like CBS Innertube that we aren’t really missing much of the cable, satellite and local networks.

Honestly, I find watching TV too distracting for work, and prefer radio only. I used to like to have CNN on in the background when we had TV, but now I can get through satellite radio. You can continue to follow our family of five without TV for ___ days counter on the left of the homepage. A search on this blog for “tv-less” will reveal other posts I’ve made on the subject from time to time.

  4. Congrats, TD. I didn’t think you would make it much past the beginning of football season. What about the Superbowl?

  5. Our neighbors have TV. Might see about the possibility of a Superbowl party with them on that day (?). Or, if the party idea doesn’t work (I don’t do many parties actually), more likely catch the Superbowl on the radio too. You do raise a good point though, the Superbowl is sort of the quintessential TV event.

Recently anyway the only time I wished we had TV was the Pay Per View Ultimate Fighting Champs fight last Saturday night. I’m sure someday most/all PPV events like that will be available on the internet (legally) as well as through the TV.

  6. […] Did I mention before that TV in Japan is one of my favorite blogs? Earlier this year, yes. This blog finds and share some wild clips from TV in Japan. […]
