The Xbox Live service is #1 as of this writing but it isn’t without problems that others can solve [Update 10/3/08 11:28am PST: dashboardthemes.com is dead, link removed] creatively like the inability to preview themes before you buy them:

The biggest issue is with the thumbnail images provided. You really have no idea how these images are going to look once all of the text and imagery that make up the Dashboard are sitting on top of them. This is why we have gone the extra step to bring you larger images that are actually screenshots of the Dashboard with the themes applied. Now you can see exactly what you’re paying for, before you decide whether or not you want to fork over the cash.

Dashboard Themes is the work of a couple high school buddies. Registered. This is a good idea guys, good luck with the site. To echo what they say in their about section linked above, Microsoft missed this opportunity when they launched their pipeline.

Wouldn’t be surprised if an upgrade to the Xbox Pipeline site adds something like what these guys are doing, but they could counter by providing customer unbiased theme reviews detailing whether the themes are worth the points. Would recommend building features in ASAP that Microsoft cannot duplicate because of their first party bias. They do have a community rating/voting feature, but there isn’t much in the way of text review/commentary.
