Joyful Tidings #1: Wii be browsing, thanks Opera |

Joyful tidings to Nintendo for making the Wii Browser available before Christmas. I spent the last hour or so checking out the Wii browser and snapping pictures and making short vids of the experience. You can check out my entire Wii browser picture gallery here but I’ve collected a few of the pictures in the post.
YouTube videos looked OK on the tv and I found myself watching a bunch of different videos. This could be a good place for a continuous video channel. You can login and the Wii browser will remember the cookies.

If you’d like to visit this blog in your Nintendo Wii browser, take the shortcut and use mughd.com. Typing in text with the Wiimote isn’t as clumsy as typing text on a cell phone, but it’s still nowhere near as optimal as using a keyboard.

MakeYouGoHmm.com looks alright. Navigating around the page is as easy as pushing the button behind and then moving the Wiimote up and down to scroll the page.

To add a favorite you click the favorite button on the Wiimote or icon on the screen and then press the icon with the + in it on the favorite screen.

I also checked out Google and even logged in and read some Gmail. When I exited the Wii browser and re-entered, my login cookie was preserved. No re-login required.

If you try to login to a site with htaccess authentication, it doesn’t have a cookie save option for those type sites. Hopefully this will be added in a future version. The Wii browser is marked as “trial” and indicates that not all features are functional yet, but still it works pretty good. It’s probably the best browser through game console implementation I’ve seen yet.

My son checked out Runescape and java doesn’t work either (yet?). Just a black space, no error message.
Get it while it’s free
For those who get a Nintendo Wii prior to June 2007, be sure and download the browser while it’s free. Nintendo joins the PS3 and PSP which both have internet browsers and leave the Xbox 360 the only nextgen console without an internet browser. C’mon Microsoft, get with the program and give us a browser inside Xbox Live.
Did this post make you go hmm?
