SkypeOUT unlimited calling US/Canada plan available for $14.95 per year by Jan 31, 2007

On Monday I posted wondering if SkypeOUT calls to the US/Canada would continue to be free. The answer (thanks Techcrunch via New York Times) is, no, they won’t be, but an unlimited plan will be offered for $14.95/year until January 31, 2007 and $29.95/year thereafter. For those who don’t buy the unlimited plan, it will cost 2.1 cents per minute. I did the math, rounding up:

$.021 / $14.95 = 712 minutes
712 minutes / 365 days = 2 minutes per day

If you are going to use SkypeOUT at all in the US/Canada, it’s worth doing the $14.95/year plan. Even the $29.95/year unlimited plan isn’t bad (also rounding up):

$.021 / $29.95 = 1426 minutes
1426 minutes / 365 days = 4 minutes per day

The $14.95/year unlimited plan is available for purchase now. The NYT story also carries this financial tidbit:

Mr. Brown said eBay had yet to demonstrate how it could integrate Skype into its business in a way that would justify the acquisition costs. In the third quarter, Mr. Brown noted, Skype generated $50 million in revenue, a mere 3 percent of eBay’s $1.45 billion in total revenue.

Why isn’t PayPal directly integrated into Skype yet? We were teased back in June with this integration. What is eBay waiting for, another company to provide the service more compelling so they can overpay for them too? Skypers should be able to easily send money from within Skype as a built-in feature to clients, friends and family. Why this integration and more is vexing to me. If you were eBay, how would you intergrate Skype into their various properties?

  1. Your calcs equate to about 59 minutes a month. or an hour to round up. Everyone in the free world talks more than that. Heck, it’s worth it if you have those teenage daughters that won’t stop hogging the phone line. lol. Not that I have any myself. ;)
