Need some PC133 SDRAM, good place to buy? |

Over the weekend I worked on a project to combine a couple older unused PCs into one semi-decent Linux machine that will be running (hopefully) 24/7 on our LAN. It took awhile to get OpenSuSE Linux 10.1 installed with GNOME and configured and it’s moving unacceptably slow. Load was up around 5.00+ until I killed novell-zmd and that only dropped load to around 2-3.xx
Currently only have 128MB RAM and would like to boost to at least 256, preferably 512MB. I will probably ditch OpenSuSE Linux in favor of Ubuntu in the long term, but right now that’s what I have installed and working. All suggestions welcome for something that works better with a slower processor and 128MB RAM. (533mhz Intel processor) as OpenSuse is probably too bloated.
In the long term I’m not happy with only 128MB of RAM and would like to upgrade. Looking through our spare parts we don’t have any additional PC133 SDRAM. I’m kicking myself because recently the local CompUSA went out of business and they had memory available heavily discounted and I didn’t think to buy any PC133 SDRAM. I did pick up two 1GB DDR chips.
Anyway I’m now in the market for some PC133 SDRAM. I’ve not bought any computer memory online anywhere ever before and thus am looking for some good places online to buy memory.
I understand that currently Google Checkout is running a $10 back for orders over $30 right now so that is a somewhat appealing avenue although our first order through them via buy.com didn’t turn out very well. Buy.com didn’t ship to the right address and then when it was returned to them, they didn’t notify us they were sitting on the inventory. They did fairly promptly reimburse our credit card when we indicated the merchandise was never received.
The different stores listed for Google Checkout include: Arch Memory and Upgrade Memory. Two online shops I’m not familiar with.
Certainly doesn’t have to be something through Google Checkout, I’m open to all good suggestions that readers have tried personally and met with success. Ideas?

It may be worth it to brave the Buy.com route again as they are actually offering $20 off $50 also.
I’ve placed quite a few orders from them in the last few weeks (50-60% of my total Christmas shopping actually) and have received everything without any errors.
Good luck!

I’ve actually never had any issues with the Google Checkout $10 off thing. Nor with Buy.com. I purchase from them every month or other month for something or another.
As far as SDRAM, man…. good luck on that. I’ve looked on eBay and everywhere else to find something compatible with a Pavilion 855XT or something like that. They cost more than twice a 1G DDR. I personally waited until Crucial/Kingston had a sale and raided their online store. Maybe they have something going on there.
As far as linux is concerned, I run Debian with minimum X with fluxbox. It manages the load quite nicely on a Celeron 333 Sony Vaio (192M ram). The surfing is still quite slow, but I can’t really complain too much since I’ve optimized it pretty much to a hilt except kernel recompile. Even have boot up down to like 30-40 seconds.

Something seems messed up about SDRAM being more expensive than DDR, lol. Thanks for the tips, darkmoon.

I buy all of my parts from Directron (http://www.directron.com). A search for PC133 SDRAM returns a bunch of results.

FWIW, Debian Linux runs great on my AMD K6 300Mhz with 192MB. I’m thinking it would still do quite well on 128MB.
