[...] It isn’t good or bad; it doesn’t mean they don’t deserve it. It is just something people should remember when wondering how these guys became top bloggers in the first place. You can’t underestimate how much easier it is to reach a wide audience when people already know who you are, how much easier it is to get high search ranking when you’re linked to by every blog on aol.com, or how much easier it is to break news when you already have the connections.
Gerald - thanks for sharing your personal interaction with Mr. Leonsis.

I didn't mean to slam him personally with this post, rather to point out that when he blogs (whether because he wants to manipulate search results or because he honestly wants to communicate, or some of both) vs. non-celebrities (most top executives are celebrities) blogging, there is a different set of criteria in play for search engine results. I guarantee your blog would benefit if it was on an AOL subdomain and linked by every blog in the Weblogs Inc circuit, particularly a PR8 one. People who read the Washington Post piece aren't treated to this part of the story.

I've met Mr. Leonsis. In fact, took the stage at a Thrifty Car Rental after his and Terry Jones' keynotes at our frachnise conference. Talked with him a bit before the show and I think he would blog no matter if he was at AOL or had a Wordpress.com domain to write from. He's definitely a passionate guy. (You can blame him for the carpet bombing of CDs from AOL by the way... That was his baby.) Sure, there's an ego stroke going on... and maybe his execution (_blank spawning) is a bit wacky... Still, he's most definitely up there with the right crowd doing the right thing.
