Cheaters reality TV show host getting stabbed real or staged?

health and lifestyle, television — by TDavid @ 7:22 am PST

Some have said most reality TV is mostly fake. Check out the following video and see if you can determine if this segment of the show Cheaters is real or scripted.

A little Google detective work turned up this digg thread where a commenter points to this sptimes story where the executive producer of the show, Bobby Goldstein, is interviewed:

I have to ask you about the time Joey Greco got stabbed by a cheating suspect during a taping. How do you avoid those kinds of dangers?

Joey wears Kevlar now, so he’s bulletproof, and we have tasers at every junction. What happened was, we were on a fishing boat, and the guy was fishing and had a fishing knife in his hand. I guess the motion of the crew on the boat caused it to become unstable. We can’t really say whether he did it intentionally or not. He got arrested and charged, and then our lawyers worked it out so he wouldn’t be prosecuted and we wouldn’t be sued.

And Joey, fortunately, didn’t have any significant injuries to any organs in his abdomen, but he does have a scar, of course.

Now consider the Wikipedia entry on the show that states:

The stabbing incident was ranked number two by the E network’s “101 Craziest TV Moments” program. The stabbing incident has since been disproven as several of the people involved have admitted to staging it.

As we cross the 145 day mark without TV, the only content I’ve missed to date is NFL Sunday. I can catch the audio of the games on Sirius, and the local game — assuming reception doesn’t suck — on our RadioSHARK. We were able to see Danny Bonaduce in Breaking Bonaduce Season Two opener episode for free on iTunes which has been about our only bout with reality TV during this time. We saw one other reality TV show for free via iTunes about some skater dude and his bodyguard friend (Rob & Big). Mr. T’s new reality show is available on iTunes ($9.99 for a season pass) and I thought about checking that one out, but the reviews haven’t been too kind.

As for the show Cheaters? Is there anything on the web debunking site, Snopes, about this? I searched a bit but didn’t find anything. My guess would be this was staged, what do you think?

Did this post make you go hmm?

  1. […] One of my problems though, is that a lot of the shows I watch aren’t always the most popular shows on TV. In fact, some of my favorite TV programs are the ones that none of my friends have ever seen. It may be that they are too busy or it could be that it’s the wrong genre to appeal to them, but more times then not it’s because they haven’t taken the time to check out the program. […]

  3. I watched this episode when he gets stabbed on the flat bottomed boat in the lake, not sure if its a Latin person or not that ’stabbed’ him as his face is blurred out. However something that I am very sure of….Joey Greico was never stabbed in this episode. If you have a DVR pause it then watch it frame by frame, you will see the very long knife, looks like a small machete, doesn’t look like a fillet knife or something you would use on a boat. The editors forgot to edit out the actual ’stabbing’ if you look closely you can see Joey Grieco ‘holding’ the knife in between his elbow and body of his jacket, you can see clearly that the knife blade is in between his arm and side. And why did they have 3 cameras shooting, why did they not keep the camera angle that had the best view of the ’stabbing’? Hummm? At the end of the show as well they narrate on how they are not sure the guy that ’stabbed’ him is in jail and called him but said he didn’t want to comment….I had my suspicions that parts of this show are stagged, now I am certain and it is no longer worthy of my DVR

  4. The stabbing episode in question aired to G4 or GSN during the last few days (got taped on our DVR). We paused it and went frame and frame and if it was “staged” it was highly edited prior to airing because we could not find any “evidence” the previous post speaks about. My husband pointed out that depending on where they were (in the water), and whether or not they were actually invited onto this guys pontoon boat (i.e. party boat), the whole incident may fall under the jurisdiction of MARITIME LAW and it is pretty clear that after this idiot “cheater” asked them to leave his boat and they did not, Maritime law states that the boat owner/operator may use force to ensure the exit from their vessel. In my own personal opinion, I find “stabbing 3 times” a bit much…especially when they identified themselves and the boat owner/operator (whichever) knew he was not under any threat. When he was backed into a corner, he (supposedly) came at Joey and knifed him.

One thing is for sure, Joey was down on the boat’s floor while the melee ensued and did anyone notice his grey/ashen color in the ambulance (which comes from blood loss)?? I had though that perhaps his spleen had been lacerated/punctured. I actually like Joey (the better of the two hosts, in my opinion) and hoped that he would not suffer any organ loss or perm injury. Sounds like he is okay — either because it was staged (although not in my opinion) or because of good and prompt medical intervention. Either way, I’m glad.

  5. Val, The reason what you saw was edited differently is because the 30 minute episodes that air on G4 are different than the original 1 hour episodes. Cheaters began aired as a 1 hour show usually with two cases per show. The G4 version is a re-edited version of single cases with new voiceover by a different voice actor and modified graphics. The G4 episodes have also added an “update” clip at the end of each episode usually pertaining to an older case. New 1 hour episodes still air in syndication with the original voiceover actor, who IMO is much funnier due to his bizarre out of touch dialog.

I have watched cheaters since I was in college and it was a small time syndicated show aired in a few Texas markets. I can say with certainty some (ok… a lot) of it IS in fact staged and completely fake. Anyone with any human insight can spot the fake episodes rather easily. Whether its unnatural unrealistic dialog, absurd scenarios or just simply body language that doesn’t jive with the situation (look for split second smiles, expressions that don’t match whats being said and unhostile posturing during the confrontations)

One case that comes to mind is one where the “cheatee” supposedly gets his foot run over by his mistress as she storms away in her infiniti QX4. You can tell the guy is doing unnatural things to place himself in front of the car, on the car and then he very blatently stands in a very awkward position in order to have his foot “run over”. Tivo and slo-mo review show his foot is never actually run over.

However, having watched the stabbing episode, I never was able to say it was or wasn’t staged. I have not seen the original version in many years but even knowing then that some cheaters episodes were fake, I don’t recall seeing any BLATANT signs it was staged.

  6. I think one of the victims of this disgusting show should shoot these son’s of bitches instead of stabbing them. They make a living from ruining people’s lives. I sincerely hope that someone or something ruins all their lives in return.

  7. Gary are you kidding? You know who ruins people’s lives? PEOPLE WHO CHEAT ON THEIR SPOUSES!

  8. Wow, well Ive been watching this blog for a few months and I am surprised that no one else can see what I saw on my DVR. Not to claim a conspiracy, but perhaps it was recently re-edited? It was as clear as day on my little 27 inch TV. My particular DVR is from dishnetwork so when you have it on pause mode you can hit the jump forward key and go frame by frame (Comes in real handy for UFC and NFL). I didn’t know that Joey Greico was allegedly ’stabbed’ 3 times. The ’stabbing’ in particular that was aired, its clear that its a planned event. The knife is such an odd shape to have on a boat, it looks like one of those plastic pirate knives for ‘kids’. At any rate, the knife is clearly seen being ‘cradled’ between Joeys left arm and his side. Maybe the editor decided it was too fast (One maybe two frames long) That it was not necessary to blur or remove? As other posters have remarked that some things of this show just seemed too odd to be naturally ‘occurring’, I too have felt the same. As soon as this ’stabbing’ event took place and was aired, my ‘BS’ detector went off. Now I don’t watch the show anymore, it just seems to similar to Springer now.

  9. I wish now I had kept this particular show in question, I could have at least attempted a few camera shots

  10. I actually have that episode recorded! I read your comments and reviewed the episode. You are RIGHT! He does hold the knife between his arm and body. It’s only like two good frames and one blurry frame but you are correct.

I also want to point out that it amazes me that no one has been shot. Cheating or not, when a group of men storm into a person’s home armed with tazers and wearing all black, I know I would be grabbing a hand gun and shooting at them while calling 911. If I was on a jury I would acquit the ‘cheater’ of all charges. Cheating is WRONG but if you enter a person’s home without permission and refuse to leave, you deserve to be shot.

It surprised me that this was mainly filmed in Texas…you would think you would have a dead film crew-member at some point.

On another note, the guy that pulled a paintball gun (staged or not) had the right idea. Shoot them with a non-lethal paintball gun after asking them to leave his apartment, and he was never arrested or charged for his actions (since he was in the legal right).

I read that the body guards carry tazers. If that is so and they tazer a naked man for defending his home, I see multi-million dollar settlements in the future.

  11. What amazes me is that my google search did not return one single news article substantiating the stabbing claim. If it did happen, wouldn’t a news company have covered it? I see only blogs and youtube and nothing else.

  12. Bryan Thank you for saving that episode. Im glad Im not the only one that saw that cheap ass ‘pirates of Caribbean sword’ that they used to ’stab’ Greco. I dont even see cheaters listed in the programming guide anymore, so maybe its off the air. I think overall there is a lot of this behavior of ’staging’ events in programming now maybe for more dramatic appeal. But it can certainly backfire.
Also another note, anyone remember ‘Americas got talent’ that urban dancer ‘Ivan Urban action figure’ Well for dramatic affect he placed one of about 12 folding metal chairs backwards so when he attempted the stunt of rope a doping over the top, he would hit that first chair and crash and burn into the rest of the chairs. If anyone has this recorded watch it, youll see clearly the first chair is backwards. Not sure why he would do this as he was in the running for the grand prize, but it certainly happened regardless of motive.

  13. I dislike this show on the level of trying to take it as “real” or “serious.” The scenarios that happen are just so over the top sometimes and I have no idea how this sort of program is allowed to follow people to private property or how they always conveniently catch people for the ‘confrontation’, even in private property such as a secured car park at a work space. An episode that is on at the moment is where a “police officer” comes to cheaters because he suspects his wife is cheating and asks them to track her for two weeks. Surely any law enforcer knows that this sort of conduct is illegal and borderline stalking/trespassing. Why would a police officer resort to such a cheesy TV program and not use his own police force to perform a ’stakeout’ or get some sort of legal action taken himself?

The show is absolutely ridiculous. Unfortunately, with most of the things they film and do, the only way they could not find themselves in court every week would be to have the entire event staged. Think about Jerry Springer - people crave attention and will do anything either for money or to be on television and sometimes even for both at the same time. Humanity can suck, sometimes.

  14. I agree this stabbing is a absolute scam just for attention i also notice how he goes to the Maury povich show and kiss his ass show his fake clips i hope the guy who allegedly “stabbed” Greco gets acquitted and sue the show for slander and fraud and get a big settlement and have there reality show yanked off the air and Joey Greco goes to Jail for lying to investigators plus have you all notice each time he gets in trouble by the Dallas police department they arrest him and don’t file any criminal charges that is stupid! i swear the people who thinks this stabbing is real is very gullible its 100% FAKE!!!

  15. Private eye work is not stalking. I ahve not seen them confront people on private property it is always out in the open.
