Diamond Dave drowned out by his band |
As mentioned last week, my wife and I caught the David Lee Roth Band on Saturday night at the Emerald Queen in Tacoma, WA and listened to the following setlist:
Hot For Teacher
California Girls
Just Like Paradise
Runnin’ with the Devil
Guitar Solo (sort of an Eruption variant) / You Really Got Me
Beautiful Girls
Somebody Get Me A Doctor
Jamie’s Cryin’
… Cradle Will Rock
Just a Gigalo
Unchained
Panama
Dance The Night Away
Ice Cream Man (Dave played the opening guitar)
Everybody Wants Some
Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love
Jump
Band sounded great, Roth’s vocals were drowned out too much so you couldn’t really tell what he’s got left in the tank, but he did have some good signature “woohs!” He did this fast thing with a baton during the Jump encore that was pretty impressive. A few of the lyrics were messed up and Dave admitted at one point “I forgot the f**king lyrics.” He didn’t do much in the way of jumps like he did in the 70s and 80s. He told a few stories. Good concert, overall. I’d be interested in a VH reunion with Roth fronting. He didn’t look as old in person as some of the pictures I’ve seen recently.
Fans put most of the songs on this tour on YouTube which I collected in a single blog post for those curious what Diamond Dave sounds like these days. Interesting considering all the copyright complaints that YouTube hasn’t done anything about these recent videos of the concerts.
Wolfie on the VH bass prowl
Eddie Van Halen has announced that his 15 year old son, Wolfgang (aka Wolfie) will be taking up the bass duties for Van Halen. This appears, at least for the near future, to leave longtime VH bassist Michael Anthony out although Eddie told Howard Stern in an interview a couple weeks ago that he’s not mad at anybody. Eddie also mentioned that there would be a solo album coming out from the VH brothers. Will it be strictly instrumental?
There continue to be unconfirmed rumors of a VH reunion tour in 2007 with Roth on vocals. Roth didn’t confirm or deny these rumors at the concert.

Man, I would go see it…but I am not thrilled at all, about the prospects of Michael Anthony being out of Van Halen.
That would just suck…
Glad you dug the show..

Yeah, Michael Anthony is killer on that Jack Daniels bass and has good harmony vocals. Not sure that Wolfie will be much help singing although Eddie VH made it sound like he’s more talented than him.

Reunion for big cash!!! Dave Lee and the VH bros. Ego meets need to relieve old times. Shame that the fans will have to see these old rockers past there best. But if the WHo are still touring why not the original VH. How long will the show last no one knows, let see if Ed and Roth have any camarederie or will it be fakin smiles for the cameras. Lets not forget 1996 Video Music awards?
Still bigger incentive now as Ed\’s son needs to try his hand and reviving the classsic VH sound. Well if Dweezil Zappa can play his Dads old tunes why not Wolfie and bring his Dad and Uncle out of retirement. Sad but true.
