The Wizzard of Pods, Libsyn being acquired |
Wizzard Software (yes, two z’s) which makes speech software is buying Libsyn:
Wizzard Software (OTCBB: WIZD) announced today that it has agreed to acquire Libsyn, the world’s largest podcasting network. Following the acquisition, Libsyn will maintain its independence and continue to grow its successful brand and loyal podcasting community, empowering podcasting everywhere. The Libsyn network broadcasts over 42 million podcast downloads per month to at least 13 million people worldwide. In 2006 alone, Libsyn has had over 360 million audio and video podcast downloads
The last time I checked in with Libsyn, which hosts all our Hmmcasts and some of our other audio files, they were flirting with the idea of getting away from accepting monthly PayPal payments, which to my knowledge never happened. This acquisition is interesting because Libsyn never struck me as someone trying to build and flip. Rather, they seemed like a group of guys putting together a useful podcast hosting company in their spare time.
With a text to speech technology company buying them maybe we’ll be seeing our podcasts automatically transcribed in the future? I bet podcasters would be all for that. Plenty of possibilities here. The press release looks familiar to what Google said about YouTube, that they would “keep their independence.” I’m curious where this one will lead.
