Forgot where you put your keys, just summon Clark’s Nutcracker |
This one is almost as vexing as keyrot. Ever forget where you left your keys? My wife, who I love more than anyone, is one of the worst about losing her keys. It’s always right before we’re leaving that the panic begins with “do you know where my keys are?” Why I would ever know where she left her keys is beyond me.
I put my wallet and keys in the same place to avoid the last minute frustration of losing them. If you lay them down in different places without thinking about that brief instant, then it can become very easy to forget where you put them.
Clark’s Nutcracker is a bird with an incredibly useful skill, via ABC:
This amazing little bird, a member of the famously clever corvid family, collects 30,000 or so tiny pine nuts each fall, and then hides them in about 5,000 different locations over an area of about 15 square miles. Then in the winter, when snow blankets its natural habitat in the western United States, the nutcracker returns to collect its cache with astounding precision.
Would not want to play hide and go seek against Clark’s Nutcracker, wow. What is your #1 technique for remembering where you put things?
Did this post make you go hmm?

I do the same thing. When I used to work on a machine for a living, I would setup my work area every day by putting my daily tools in a particular place. Took about 2 minutes to collect them from where the last shift put them. Then I would put them in a certain place. This way if I needed them in a hurry, I could practically get them with my eyes closed. Which happened often on 3rd shift hehe (though not very safe).
I don’t work on a machine anymore, but I do have a ‘cubby’ at home. Its really a place in our entertainment system. But when I come home, I place my keys on a hook every time. I also put my wallet, watch and any other goods into my cubbie. This way I know where they are at any time. Does this seem a bit compulsive? Or just practical?

To keep track of my keys the #1 thing is a standard location. Otherwise, if I throw them somewhere I always make an effort to leave them on top of something, not to the side, etc. Things will still get lost from time to time but this cuts down on the mornings with the “where are my keys”.

Like you, I make sure my keys and wallet go to the exact same place every day. If I leave them laying around wherever, I lose them. If by chance I lose something else, I always have to retrace my steps with it. It’s the only way I’ve found to really cover every possible chance for the item to run away.

I like to travel, so it’s incumbent on me not to misplace important objects or documents, or else the enjoyment of my trip will be compromised. I have a Rick Steves’ style pack-on-wheels that’s all I carry on the jet, no checked baggage. I put everything in the same place each time that I put it years ago, so even if I’m sometimes absent-minded, I have a fail-safe retrieval system.

[…] Forget about utilyzing the talents of a bird with an amazing memory as I’d pondered last month, there might be a more realistic tech gadget solution to keep from losing keys on the horizon. […]
