Don’t Rush to an idiotic conclusion, Limbaugh |
Rush Limbaugh decided to criticize Michael J. Fox in his ad below for acting over the effects of Parkinson’s:
“I stated when I saw the ad, I was commenting to you about it, that he was either off the medication or he was acting. He is an actor, after all.” — Rush Limbaugh
Politics aside, I can’t stand that blowhard Rush Limbaugh. I’ve tried listening to his radio show a few times and his voice just rubs me wrong. He sounds like the loud, obnoxious guy at the event you wish would shut his hole. Unfortunately this smack across the face of Michael J. Fox probably won’t negatively impact Limbaugh’s popularity. Limbaugh is a self-admitted pill addict and that didn’t hurt his popularity, so why expect any different here? Limbaugh kind of reminds me of Biff from the movie trilogy Fox is best known for Back To The Future.
Fox wants stem cell research approved because it would help find a cure faster for diseases like he has and is emphasized in the video below that Limbaugh was criticizing.
Does it make any difference if Fox intentionally went off his meds for additional impact in this video? Not to me. He still is living with a disease that he needs medication to control. Having to pop pills to keep the shaking down for the rest of your life is a sobering thought. Can stem cell research help find a cure that wouldn’t require Fox and others afflicted to take medication for the rest of their lives? It can’t hurt.
President Bush weighed in on stem cell research in 2001 only allowing research on a small 60 existing stem cell embryos:
I also believe human life is a sacred gift from our Creator. I worry about a culture that devalues life, and believe as your President I have an important obligation to foster and encourage respect for life in America and throughout the world. And while we’re all hopeful about the potential of this research, no one can be certain that the science will live up to the hope it has generated.Eight years ago, scientists believed fetal tissue research offered great hope for cures and treatments — yet, the progress to date has not lived up to its initial expectations. Embryonic stem cell research offers both great promise and great peril. So I have decided we must proceed with great care.
CNN delves into the stem cell issue and response following the Bush administration decision. I understand the ethical cloning concerns, but I can think of a lot worse things to spend tax money on than stem cell research (hint: Iraq).
It’s too easy piling on Limbaugh’s idiotic comments here as others are already doing, so where do you weigh in on the more important issue of stem cell research? Ironically perhaps Limbaugh will fuel renewed interest and positive, productive discussion and debate on this topic.

I love the idea of adult stem cell research. According to clinicaltrials.gov there are a lot of open trials using adult stem cells. The main argument for using embryonic stem cell is that there is hope a benefit may someday be found. Adult stem cells have benefits now. Seems to me we can avoid the controversy and focus studying what has *demonstrated* to be useful.

Rush has been around for twenty years now. Republicans in my part of the country still follow his every word. He can have his maid buy him drugs but they will still listen to him as a moral authority. I gave up on him a long time ago but it is sad to see that his kind are in charge of the Republicans now.

I say full speed ahead on any research that may improve human life.

Since he first stated it publicly, I’ve never doubted that Bush’s position on embryonic stem cell research was one of political expediency. I’ve always thought his pose of religiosity was utterly insincere, and if the consequences for this country of his actions weren’t so terrible, it would be laughable. I think the way Bush and team have conducted their war in Iraq and the ‘war on terror’ gives the lie to any pretense he might make of concern and respect for human life.

HATRED OF RUSH AND BUSH AND SYMPATHY FOR FOX HAS TOTALLY CLOUDED THE ISSUE. FOX AND OTHERS DESERVE A CURE, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT…THE REST OF US DESERVE THE TRUTH. IN AN EFFORT TO GET YOUR VOTE, A NUMBER OF DEMOCRATS HAVE SECURED THE SERVICES OF FOX TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THEIR POSITION ON STEM CELL RESEARCH. FAIR ENOUGH.. .HE IS THE MOST SYMPATHETIC FACE OF PARKINSONS IN THE COUNTRY…WHY NOT GET THE BEST, RIGHT? NO PROBLEM. BUT WHAT M.J. FOX DOES….KNOWINGLY OR NOT…IS MIS-STATE (LIE) ABOUT THE RECORD AND POSITIONS OF THOSE DEMOCRATS OPPONENTS. AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM…WHETHER YOU ARE RUSH LIMBAUGH OR JOE BLOW..
FOR MOST OF US…CAN WE CHALLENGE HIM? HELL NO,HE\\\’S M.J. FOX! AND HE HAS PARKINSONS YOU UNSYMPATHETIC IDIOT! HOW DARE YOU…BLAH BLAH BLAH.. AND AS THAT SUPERFICIAL FIRESTORM RAGES ON, THE REAL ISSUES GET LOST IN THE SMOKE.
RUSH WONDERED WHY FOX LOOKED SO DIFFERENT IN THE POLITICAL ADS THAN HE USUALLY DOES WHEN WE ALL SEE HIM ON TV. WHY ISNT THAT A FAIR QUESTION? EXAMPLE–WHEN YOUR CO-WORKER SHOWS UP AT WORK IN A SUIT FOR THE FIRST TIME AND YOU WONDER… HMMM WHO IS HE TRYING TO IMPRESS/WHAT\\\’S HE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH WITH THE CHANGE\\\”. ON TV M.J.FOX SHAKES AND TREMBLES AND SO LIKE MOST OF US , RUSH, HAVING NEVER SEEN THIS VERSION OF M.J. FOX BEFORE, WONDERS OUT LOUD, HMMM I WONDER WHO HE IS TRYING TO IMPRESS …IN OTHER WORDS..WHAT IS HIS INTENTION? - IS IT TO MORE GREATLY IMPACT THE VIEWERS AS TO THE DIBILITATING EFFECTS OF PARKINSONS AS PART OF THE POLITICAL PRESENTATION? THAT IS A REASONABLE QUESTION….YOU MAY NOT LIKE THE BLUNTNESS OF HOW RUSH ASKED IT, BUT IT IS AS FAIR A QUESTION AS IS YOU WONDERING ABOUT THE GUY IN YOUR OFFICE IN THE SUIT.
AND THE FAIR ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION IS … IT DOESN\\\’T MATTER , HE HAS PARKINSONS AND IN TRUTH HE CAN DO WHAT HE WANTS TO MAKE HIS POINT… BUT… WHEN THE POINT HE IS MAKING INCLUDES MANIPULATING VOTERS ( YOU & ME) AT THE BEHEST OF DEMOCRATS, BY DISTORTING THE STEM CELL RECORD OF REBUPLICANS , WELL, THEN RUSH HAS A RIGHT TO POINT THAT OUT. AND WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO SEE PAST THE SYMPATHY TO THE TRUTH.
AND ANY SECOND OF TIME SPENT ON RUSH\\\’S LEAD IN TO THE DISCUSSION INSTEAD OF FOXS CONTENT OF THE MESSAGE (AND THE INTENT BEHIND IT) IS A WASTE OF TIME AND A DISSERVICE TO ALL OF US.
HERES THE KICKER…DO YOUR HOMEWORK….FIND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH. IT HAS YEILDED NOTHING BUT NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS SO FAR..ADULT STEM CELLS ARE WORKING AND HELPING AND LEGAL AND AVAIABLE AND FEDERALLY AND PRIVATELY FUNDED NOW.
FOX, IN HIS UNDERSTANDABLE QUEST FOR A CURE, HAS UNFORTUNEATELY, LIED TO VOTERS ABOUT CANDIDATES AND OVERHYPED THE HOPE FOR EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH…AND…AS RUSH SAID, THIS BELOVED AMERICAN HAS BECOME A WILLING OR UNKNOWING PAWN IN DEMOCRATIC PARTISAN POLITICS…AND THAT SHOULD LEAVE US ALL SHAKING OUR HEADS.

Geez Dave, turn off the CAPS LOCK, please. I am asking for those in the know to bring forth their facts, not political “our man is better than you” crap. Do you have specifics on stem cell research to add to the discussion or not? Rush Limbaugh is a bag of air as far as I’m concerned, I’d like to know specifically what makes stem cell research bad? The cloning thing is one negative, but are there others?

People like Dave ETTL should know that posting in all CAPS just makes their message harder to read, and most people won’t even make it to the end of a long-winded passage like this. If they really want to get the point across to readers, they should stop the typing equivalent of yelling–it just turns people off.
