High school open house tech revelation

health and lifestyle — by TDavid @ 6:59 am PST

Last night was open house. Two of our three teens are in high school now and it was the most poorly attended open house we’ve ever attended. The teachers were almost without exception apathetic about the attendence.

“As the kids get older, less parents show up.”
“Sophomores, Freshmen, we see a few. Juniors, Seniors, no.”

We split up, Kara with our middle son and I went with our older son. Comparing mental notes afterward, I received better feedback than my wife.

Perhaps the most noteworthy tech moment of the night was when one of the teachers mentioned a new website feature where we’ll be able to login and check in on the status of our teen’s progress, including how they are doing, missing assignments and homeworks, test results, etc. Soon there will be no more stale progress reports. Well, there still will be, but at least we can be proactive about the situation. We’ve been doing email back and forth with teachers for years.

A low moment was in drama class where the teacher admitted that the school currently had no theater they could use. “We do skits in class.” Perhaps the lowest moment in class was American Lit where vocabulary is one of the homework focuses and erased on the desk where I sat beneath my fingers was a homophobic obscenity — misspelled.

  1. Well, at least they aren’t teaching that word.

  2. The online grade sites are an awesome tool for parents, and students alike. Or at least they could be if the teachers had the technological skills to use it. My daughter’s school has been using one for 3 years, and while the information has at times been wonderful, the frustration with slow updates, no information, or wrong information has been maddening.
