With HP scandal, what good companies remain to buy computers from? |
Somebody summon Rod Serling, or maybe already has summoned the Mission Impossible team. Apparently Carly Fiorina’s replacement at HP, Patricia Dunn authorized spying on directors:
authorizing a team of independent electronic-security experts to spy on the January 2006 communications of the other 10 directors-not the records of calls (or e-mails) from HP itself, but the records of phone calls made from personal accounts. That meant calls from the directors’ home and their private cell phones.
Amazing.
Are there any good companies left to buy computers from? Toshiba, maybe? Some Dell and Apple laptops have had fiery battery problems and a possible Apple stock scandal, HP / Compaq has a stinky fish swimming around at the top. Sony has admitted in the past to including secret rootkits and is the manufacturer of many fiery batteries. What’s next, computers that punch you in the face when you don’t use them enough?
I got it, let’s design a computer that shocks you through the keyboard whenever it finds out you’ve used a competing product. Or how about one that jails you in your home until you’ve looked at and used their preloaded bloatware? Ridiculous? That’s what we think now.
Really, it’s becoming a daunting task as a consumer wanting to buy reasonably priced computer products and services from companies that aren’t involved in questionable activities. I’d like to support companies that at least try to run non-evil companies. Clearly that’s becoming a more difficult task.
Did this post make you go hmm?

I have bought built to order PC’s from Systemax through tigerdirect for a few years now. Over 15 of them over the span of a few years. They have great warranties, and stand by them solidly. I’ve only needed to use the warranty program once. The units are solid, and perform well.
They ’seem’ to be honest.

I have a R series IBM Thinkpad and it’s been the best, most reliable machine I’ve ever owned. So Lenovo get my vote as a company I’d still do business with.

I have a Toshiba Satellite, and the thing has been pretty bulletproof. Before that I had an eMachine, and, well…….
