Hmmcast #21: Toilets, automation, average commuting time |

This is the longest Hmmcast to date. Would like to say 15 minutes is the max that any episode will ever be, but it’s starting to grow a bit. At the end, I spend a couple bonus minutes talking about some of the challenges of adding a video component. I’m definitely starting to get a little frustrated with the time it takes to put together a decent video presentation. I realize I haven’t shared what I’ve done so far, but that’s for a good reason: I don’t think the quality is very good. I remember reading that rocketboom takes a day to write, produce and shoot and while I’m not trying for anything as detailed and involved as Rocketboom, it’s still taking hours instead of minutes to get this done and unfortunately I don’t have hours for this project, only minutes.
I need to find or create a system that will let me do the video portion in less than an hour. That’s the whole process from start to finish. That might seem like plenty of time but a couple minutes of video take at least 15 minutes to shoot when you talk rehearse, shoot and reshooting, as necessary. None of this includes laying out the transitions, the text and virtual or real backgrounds. Then there’s the compression phase and finally uploading to the server and/or video sharing sites.
I might have to opt for sort of a mini, quick Hmmcast optimized for video that is like no more than 2-5 minutes rather than try to do the whole thing or maybe consider video only once a month or something. I haven’t figured out the best way yet. If anybody reading happens to be an experienced videoblogger and can share some good links or advice in the comments below, I’m all eyes and ears.

“I have a different take on this issue. Some of my friends may think I’m a fanatical germophobe, but I still say it doesn’t do much good to wash your hands, if you then proceed to grab the door handle or knob (if there is one) on your way out, since it’s probably been touched by dozens or even hundreds of people who didn’t wash their hands.”

“What’s up with sinks where the spigots are so far back you have to rub the back of the sink bowl when you wash? Here’s this 18 inch diameter sink and he freaking water is pouring out an inch from the edge. What’s the point? Same with water fountains, which I rarely use. My kid tells me some of the kids at school french kiss the water fountain to get a drink. Ick.”

“I’ve done a bit of network printer setup. It’s part of my job. I have not worked with Minolta printers, but they can’t be that different. First, set the IP address in the printer. This is usually accomplished using the printer’s buttons and a menu on the LCD. (In the old days, we had to RARP the thing. Ugh.”

“My commute is about an hour and 45 minutes each way; 20 - 30 minute drive to train, one hour train ride, 20 minute walk to the office. We moved a considerable distance from Boston in order to afford a condo. I try to use the time productively, but it still has a huge impact on my quality of life.”
