Average commute now 25.1 minutes says Census Bureau |

Commuters across the country have saved a .4 minute according a Census Bureau study. Our work commute to our offline business office is about four blocks. We’re looking into a satellite office for KMR Enterprises that will be about five to six blocks. Of course those who work entirely on the web and work out of their homes have their commute time measured in seconds instead of minutes. Here are some of the other stats:
• The share of people driving alone to work increased from 75.7 percent in 2000 to 77 percent last year.
• The share of people carpooling to work dropped from 12.2 percent in 2000 to 10.7 percent last year.
• The share of people using mass transit stayed the same at 4.7 percent.
The study doesn’t mention telecommuting as a possible reason for the decrease in commuting time, but you have to factor that in as a strong contributing factor. It does show the share of people working at home has increased 3.3 percent.
If we should end up pulling the trigger for the satellite office we’re currently looking at than most of KMR Enterprises will be running out of a second office building. For years I’ve been dividing my office time between our home office and office on main street for our offline business and frankly prefer to work out of a regular office (Mon-Fri 9-5) than an office in our home. Why? You never really escape work if it’s out of your home and also I like seeing people on a regular basis doing face to face business.
And it’s important to separate work and home if for no other reason than getting the proper amount of rest, relaxation and family time. Long ago, we removed our home number from our business cards and then a few years later we took out the phone in our home out and replaced with VoIP. Probably cost us some after office hours business, but peace is priceless.
The Math
Even when not commuting we still put on a good 20,000 miles a year on our vehicles for work-related travel. I would not want to spend 25.1 minutes every day. Multiply that by five days a week, 50 weeks a year:
5 days x 50 weeks (assumes two weeks per year for vacation, sick and personal days)
= 250 days x 25.1 minutes
= 6251 minutes / 60 minutes
= 104.58 hours / 24 hours per day
= 4.3 days per year spent in your car!
Umm, no thanks on spending that much time in my car commuting. And if that’s a one-way commute, you would need to double the numbers to end up with over a week spent in your car every year.
How long is your commute?
Did this post make you go hmm?

My commute is about 15 seconds: from the kitchen (after breakfast) down the hall and to my office.

You like working out of home, Sterling?

Since I moved from the west side to the east side, my commute has dropped from an hour, to about 10 minutes, no traffic!
Love it, love it, love it.
Side note - worked out of my home for about a year, and hated it….I like being around people too much, as I discovered, and had a hard time with the fact that I had to leave my house, to leave work!

…and I really should have read your post before commenting, and not just your discussion here in the comments!

And the above is exactly why I like being in an office…..it drove me crazy working from home, because I never could really get away from work….for example, if I would think of something work-related at 2am when I couldn’t sleep, I would get up and take care of it, check email, and before I knew it, I had been up and working for 3 more hours…
I’ll pass on that, and I did!

I love working from home. My office is way at one end of the house, and I just don’t go there when I’m in down time.

My commute is 40min one way! Thats roughly 15 days on the road ;(
I couldn’t work from home, I wouldn’t get anything done. But I sure would like to shorten this commute!

Depends on the method I pick on the day:
walking 20minutes, biking 10 minutes, car 2mins.
I think the most important thing if you are going to work from home is a *DEDICATED* office is a must. Still won’t stop all the downsides of working from home making the seperation difficult but without it then madness is almost guaranteed.

My commute is about an hour and 45 minutes each way; 20 - 30 minute drive to train, one hour train ride, 20 minute walk to the office. We moved a considerable distance from Boston in order to afford a condo. I try to use the time productively, but it still has a huge impact on my quality of life.

My daily commute time one way is about 1 hour. It is a long long drive every day. I don’t really look at it as a waste of time though. I found a good way to make it productive (see signature link). I posted all the ways I blow the time there.

Say”I think the most important thing if you are going to work from home is a *DEDICATED* office is a must. Still won’t stop all the downsides of working from home making the seperation difficult but without it then madness is almost guaranteed” ver good post.
