After death MySpacees don’t part with MyDeathSpace

Dying sucks. MySpace doesn’t suck (by current popular opinion anyway). So what do you get when you add death + MySpace? MyDeathSpace.com. Shocker: not affiliated with or endorsed by MySpace.com.

MyDeathSpace bills itself as:

Your global resource for MySpace.com member obituaries.

Gotta love the death mask favicon, a real bright motiff.

As of this writing the MyDeathSpace death toll is at 457 with the most recent death of a MySpace member being hit by a drunk driver. Yes, they are keeping track. How? There is a submit death form which contains fields for cause of death and the news URL, but this writer is left wondering who would submit their loved one’s or friend’s death to a site like this? To any third party website for that matter?

Upon further reflection I suppose virtual obituaries could be a live market, pardon the pun, as print newspapers become less and less relevant. And certainly how do you find out what happened to a member in an active community if you don’t know the member personally? I’ve seen too many things faked online not to raise one eye squinted at the idea of a non official public record verified site for obituraries. Fake illnesses, fake diseases, fake charity drives and yes, even fake deaths online.

Are they serious or joking? Memorial or exploitation? Popgadget can’t sort this one out either. In the meantime we can buy MyDeathSpace buttons and magnets for 50 cents a pop.

In case you were wondering, the mydeathspace.com site receives hate mail and proudly publish it on their forums:

mydeathspace.com hate mail forums

Are people going to have to start putting in their wills requests not to be memorialized on websites? I’m a rarely visiting MySpace member and this is my public request not to be listed on this site when my heart should stop beating at some point in the future. If you submit my death to this or a site like this, then I’ll stalk you in the afterlife.

I was tempted to put this one under the 666 category. Don’t play Stairway to Heaven backwards while surfing this site.

Did this post make you go hmm?

  3. you really need to tell more about mydeathspace.com and the people it crushes. dig into what the owner is really about. do a little more research on this please. read the comments people leave and you will see. mike anderson is one of the worse. he was asked by warren st john of the NY times to cool it about my friend. he did remove her profile but has allowed a thread to continue about kelli & her mom. things like “her mom should go dry hump her daughters corpse”

he has not only seen this and not removed the comments, he is now adding to the comments.
hmm makes ya wonder why he lies and says he removes rude things.

out this guy for what he really is.

  4. kelli’s friend - I’m sorry to hear about that. I don’t really care for these type of sites, but I left your comment in tact with link so that others may follow and judge for themselves appropriately. The web can be an ugly place sometimes :(

  5. Okay, honestly, why are you people so childish?!
Obviously if someone submitted their friends death, or family members death
then it doesn’t bother anybody. It’s not hurting anybody, so get a life and stop
being such a hater. I think it is a great site; people use this as a tribute to their friends and family members. It’s a great memorial site. So s.t.f.u. and leave
    it alone.

  6. Sane, it’s the hateful comments left by the forum members that hurt the families.

  7. Sane you moron. Almost NONE of the deaths on that damn site were posted by family/friends of the dead!! They are all posted by sickos who have nothing better to do than sit their fat asses at the computer all day, gossiping about what may or may not have been involved in someone’s death. You want to investigate deaths so f-in bad? Become a damn investigator!! That’s not rocket science you ass! Do you really thinks friends/family want to go to a webite as disgusting as MDS and converse with a forum full of unsympathetic, self-absorved, strangers who did not know a single thing about their loved one? The ass is no. The ONLY time I have seen a loved one visit that site is to try and clear up lies and tell people to stop talking about a subject they know nothing about!! The response is usually, but not limited to “Leave you dumb bitch …. go cry about your dead son elsewhere”. How is theat helping people to greive Sane? It doesn’t.
