Midnight Maddeniacs |

A dark and desolate drive up to Wal-mart tonight. Until my son and I arrived there wasn’t much going on. At the mouth of the entrance a few Madden fans were exiting and talking about the game. We snaked our way through the store and toward the game area. There were no Madden 2007 Xbox 360 games on the shelves but behind the counter the Wal-mart employees were wearing football jerseys and asking: “what system?”
“360,” I replied and the man pulled out Madden 2007 from a stack of games. I paid $65.19 for the game after tax and every penny was worth it for this smile:

One of the first things our youngest son checked was the achievements. Both he and our middle teenager son are fixated on getting a higher gamerscore. One of them is over 4,500 and the other — the family account actually — is over 7,000.
Our son liked the picture on the back of the game box where it showed the guy “getting strong” (pumping iron) and even mentioned it to his brother. “Look, you can make your guys stronger.”
Here are a couple screenshots, but I’ll get some better ones tomorrow by hooking the 360 directly into the computer.

As I grow older it’s become more important to me watching our kids play the games — or playing co-op with or against them — than playing the games by myself. It’s a special feeling seeing their reactions and cheering them on to as they improve their skills. Could this be the early signs of grandparentism seaping into my bloodstream? Or is this just parental? I haven’t played Madden 2007 tonight and won’t be but suspect our son might be up for awhile tapping away at the controller.
It’s still summertime and I don’t mind him staying up. That’s what I probably would have done at his age. Might even have pulled an all-niter. Will be curious to hear what he has to say about Madden 2007 tomorrow.
Any readers hit the stores tonight for midnight Madden 2007 mania?

[…] While they might have the NFL license wrapped up, EA shouldn’t be banking too much on Madden. Madden 07 didn’t have significant improvements over prior years, hopefully Madden 2008 due out this August does. One of the most anticipated EA games Spore [see Spore raw video footage in this past post] by the Sims creator Will Wright might not be released until fiscal year 2009, which sent negative energy toward EA stock.
