Develop for Xbox 360 for only $99 a year, oh yeah |

Back in March, I asked where to send the $100 check for developing for the Xbox 360. It seems the answer will be coming at the end of this month.
On a Wednesday, of course.
Wednesday is fast becoming a historic launch day of the week for the Xbox. Fellow independent and small shop developers assuming the XNA Game Studio Express isn’t completely handicapped it’s good news:
Microsoft said its tool kit, called XNA Game Studio Express, will make it easier for enthusiasts to create games to run on Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox 360 console or personal computers running its Windows operating system.A test version of the tool kit will be out by August 30. The final product will be available this holiday season for an annual subscription of $99 per year for Xbox 360 game development.
Our middle teenager has become quite the videogamer, so I bet he’ll be stoked when I tell him about this kit and the opportunity to build his own Xbox 360 games. He has shown some interest in game development. The kit will be free to develop for Windows PC games.
I’d be lying if I said the word “Express” in the title didn’t have me somewhat concerned, but I’ll hold off until I get my hands on the kit and see what it can and cannot do.

[…] Maybe I’m being completely dense here but why doesn’t the hobbyist game framework for building Xbox 360 games XLA Game Studio Framework that I’ve been excited about and looking forward to work with Visual Studio 2005 Professional? Why is it only with the Visual Studio C# Express edition? I looked around the official XLA Framework Team blog and there doesn’t appear to be an explanation (?). There is a very thorough explanation of the psychology behind the framework and other interesting details about the framework. I’m subscribed to this team blog and like what I’ve seen so far here. It should be free (for 360) I already paid 400!

I can understand that perspective, LuisAT. We’ll see after a year has passed how much new content that $100 opens up for folks. Really when you pay $5-10 a game in the Arcade already if one can get 15 or so decent homebrew developed titles, then it’s well worth the extra $100 a year.

100 bucks a year to publish games for 360 its like free to me, and the guy that made AlienHD now can pay this, but I just want to compile and run the demo that came with XNA on my xbox too, change some things, and maybe create something new, and this way, only on my xbox, should be free.
Its only my opinion, I think this way xbox can grow faster. []
