Recommend a good mass domain management program? |
Need your help.
We’re looking for a good mass domains management tool/utility that runs as a client app on Windows or Mac. Might consider a web service too if it’s really good. These are the minimum features we’re looking for:
- sorting and grouping by domain name, registrar, renewal/expiration date
- allow pricing to be entered for managing annual domain costs
- supports multiple domain name registrars and thousands of domains
We’ve hit all the common suspects: Google, Tucows, Version Tracker and have a few ideas to start with but I thought by throwing it out to readers maybe we’d pick up some more that perhaps aren’t on the obvious radars. With all the software and services I’ve reviewed, domain management isn’t something I’ve come across that much.
Some software we’re considering
KF Whois ($39) - they offer a pro version for $99 too.
Domain Punch ($49)
Domain Name Commando ($99) - emails you changes on domains with before and after marked in red. Nice feature.
Domain Tracker ($24.95, Mac)
Your suggestion(s)?
For webmaster readers, are you using a good program to manage your domains? Please share the link in the comments below for any good domain program you are currently using or have used in the past to manage multiple domains. Don’t mind if it’s commercial, shareware or freeware, but do care that it’s something you have actually used and liked. Please tell us how long you’ve used the program and what specifically you liked about it. If you happen to be the developer, that’s fine too as long as you provide some details that indicate you actually read this post and our needs and aren’t just dumping a link here for exposure.
And feel free to make your link an affiliate link. If we like the program then we’ll buy through your link and make you a few bones.
Update 5:37pm PST: Removed the Domain Name Keeper as the download link was 404 too. Thanks for the head’s up, JP.

I guess I’m still in the 1990’s. I register all of my domains through my ISP, who also hosts them. They provide management through an on-line dashboard. Sorry, no help for you.

Our existing registrars have online management programs, but they aren’t quite what we need. I keep seeing Go Daddy ads everywhere so I wonder if they offer a good program for domain management. Problem is it would be more of a hassle to move all our domains to one place, plus I prefer to keep this biz spread around a bit, even if it costs us a few more bones.
I’m tempted to register a new domain there just to see what tools they offer. Take one of our registrars for example, which I’ll leave nameless to protect the guilty, it doesn’t tell you when your domains renew, they just bang your credit card automatically. In order to find out when the domains renew you have to run WHOIS on each domain (how helpful is that?!). Our other registrar makes every domain detail search a separate clickthru and there is no single page of info.
We do have a file of our domains and renewal date and sort of manually follow through with it, but it is well past time we come up with something more automated and user-friendly. I like some of the features mentioned in the post above. Our needs aren’t as complex as some of those programs, though. I could almost see this being a Wordpress plugin … hmm, now there’s a thought if nothing else fits.

…or a firefox extension.

Firefox extension would be nice…. I have a good number of domains with GoDaddy. Their email reminders at 90/60/30/15/5 are helpful if a bit annoying at times when you have more thant a dozen or so domains…
Other than that they are fine…

As you probably guessed, we have considerably more than a dozen domains. I’m not sure email is the right kind of notification though for us. RSS would be nicer if that was an option. I’d rather have something running in a place where I frequent (like inside the blog management area, hence why I said a plugin) or as a widget that will highlight in colors as a domain becomes closer to domains and only gets annoying when it’s at the critical domain registration time (a week to renewal).
Firefox extensions are an ok suggestion but for me those are starting to become like too many toolbars. Have to constantly assess and reassess if the extensions are used enough to keep them running/installed. It would be cool if Firefox had a way of turning off the extensions you don’t need instead of uninstalling them. I like that feature with the Dashboard Widgets on the Mac. Maybe a newer version will allow this type of functionality. Firefox Extension Anonymous needed!

I manage all my domains through Fabulous 5.0 http://fabulous.com/
best of all its free. you need to apply for an account though. I manage about 500 domains there since almost 2 years. Of which maybe only 10% are registered through fabulous. they have great deals on .com ($6.75) and .net ($4.75/year) but dont offer whois protection. I like that they are based in australia. Not so much a target having domains there vs. usa.
some of the features they list:
Fabulous 5.0 is the only program that offers monetization, registration, sales and domain management services
Key features of Fabulous 5.0 include:-
Market leading revenue
Customizable graphic landing pages
Keyword and associated phrase optimization
Comprehensive domain reporting
Free domain sales tools
Award winning domain security
Free DNS hosting and re-direction service
$6.75 .COM domain registrations
24/7 customer support

another great one is:
http://www.domaintools.com (formerly http://www.whois.sc/)
it’s free. But if you want more research and tracking options (not needed for domain management) you can go on a $15/month plan. I use the payplan since over a year. allows you to research IP/domain lookups. keyword tracking on expiring or newly regged domains. give it a shot. its free after all.
