Technorati rank stats update July 2006 and site review swap offer [site news] |
Warning: some navel gazing ahead, but also there is something in it for webmasters, so it’s not completely self-absorbed. Skip what follows if this doesn’t turn you on.
For those readers with blogs, you might want to check Technorati because at least some of the rank stats are changing. This blog it seemed sat forever at 367 sites linking in but in the new update over the last few days it has risen to 506 sites, a nearly 38% jump — nice, thank you to all those new sites linking in.

The last couple Technorati rank updates I’ve seen the number of sites go down even though traffic to this site had increased which didn’t quite compute. I guess it’s possible that more sites have been linking in over Technorati’s last update or perhaps their algorithm or the number of sites they count has changed. Whatever the case, I don’t want to put a hex on the trend, so definitely not, not, not complaining here.
Just for comparison purposes, I checked out Alexa which shows 361 links. I still don’t think Alexa stats are very reliable for traffic analysis, but it is interesting comparing services against each other, especially considering Technorati and Alexa were only separated by six links until recently.
Another thing I find curious is after three years not a single Alexa starred user review of this site? I don’t remember leaving a review of any other site in Alexa, so maybe it’s rare to give/receive reviews? I guess this is my not so subtle way of saying if you have a few minutes in the next few days and want to leave a user review — good, bad or indifferent — it would be appreciated.
Review for Hmm, review for your domain (limit first 10 domains)
In fact, here’s the deal: if you create an Amazon/Alexa review for makeyougohmm.com and tell me about it in the comments below (and I can confirm a review shows up with your name), then I will visit your site and do the same for your domain. Put the domain you want me to review in your comment signature URL space in the comments below. Please no non-worksafe domains. I’m no prude, I don’t mind adult-oriented sites, in fact I continue to toy with the idea of publishing a non-worksafe version of Hmm where those type sites/URLs would be allowed, but want to keep this particular offer in this thread for mainstream, worksafe domains only. And no, it doesn’t have to be a blog domain, it can be any type of website as long as the content is worksafe.
In the interest of time and not to leave this swap reviews offer completely open-ended, I’m limiting this offer to the first 10 comments/domains/reviews. If it takes three plus years to accumulate that many reviews/requests, that’s cool, as we continue to track the comments all the way back to day one. Those interested, please remember to be completely honest — brutally kind or harsh — because you know I will be about your site. Not soliciting, nor will be delivering fluff three word, five star “I like it” reviews. This is a great chance for those who hate this site to get in their licks, or those who love it to sing praises. And just so it’s clear no matter what your review is like, it will not impact the review I leave for your domain. Lastly, no promises but if it makes me go hmm and I think it might make others go hmm there is always the possibility that it could be profiled here in a future post.
As for how to leave an Alexa/Amazon site review for MakeYouGoHmm.com? Just follow this link. You’ll need your Amazon login handy. I’m not sure how long it takes for these reviews to show up (guess we’ll find out). I have left Amazon reviews on products in the past and it seemed to me like there was some delay, perhaps to weed out spam and trash. Who knows, maybe they are running their own Mechanical Turk project on the reviews?
Rewind to Technorati Rank stats
This has been the most dramatic change/shift this blog has seen with Technorati rank stats. Did your blog stats change? Was it a dramatic or subtle change?
[From Eh List: Technorati has ranked this site 3,326 (an increase of 1,100) (1,077 links (an increase of 435) from 506 sites (an increase of 139) ) 6 as of Sat Jul 15 02:52:43 UTC 2006]

Thank you for the speedy response, Gerald. The banner above is dynamic from Alexa, so the review should appear there. I’m curious how long this will take. We’ll find out soon.

Just got back from the funeral and now my wife wants me to return one of those mini-ovens back to the store. Will be getting you guys hooked up with reviews for the sites in your sig URLs as promised over the next few days. I need some time to look through and seriously digest your sites and subscribe if you have RSS feeds (except Sterling since I already subscribe to his blog).
Thank you, again!

An update on my side of reviewing your sites, status: I’ve now subscribed to your blogs Gerald and thatedguy too. One of the three blogs I’ve read completely and I’m half through the other two. I’m making copious notes along the way. My question for all three of you, so far, is: would you like me to email these notes to you should I not decide to make a blog post out of them? If you’d like that, just respond here with a yay or nay, and when I’m done (listen to today’s Hmmcast for details about how long I think this will take) I’ll either make a blog post of the info or email to you privately if you want. Also in your comments if you indicate in the positive if the email address you left in your comments was a good contact addy.
For those reading and wondering about how long the reviews took to show up: the next day the Alexa image updated with the star rating so it appears to be an overnight process. The reviews don’t show up when you click on that graphic though, you have to visit this Amazon review page to actually read them.

Really nice of you. Look forward to what you have to say whether it’s in a post, follow up email or in the Hmmcast. The email addy submitted is accurate should you go that route.

Tdavid, If you should decide to not make a post out of it, an email would be fine. You are not obligated to do either of course. Might be interesting to have some outside input on the site though.
The email submitted is accurate.

Me, I’m all about airing it. Make it into a post — the good, the bad, and the ugly. You’ve already given me lots of good criticism along the way, but any other observations and ideas from you are always welcome.
And thanks again, TDavid!

Another update: I got your review done and submitted tonight, Gerald, so it should show up tomorrow at Amazon. Also sent you an email, look for something from my gmail address with details. I’ve read the complete archives of thatedeguy and chipsquips and have started writing those reviews, but it will be a few more days, maybe as late as next week before I get those done and submitted to Amazon and email you two.

You are incredibly thorough, TDavid. Thanks again.

thatedeguy - FYI: Amazon/Alexa shows your site is currently unavailable for reviewing. I took a screenshot here just in case it changes. I’m going to send you my notes directly via email today, if/when you figure out why nobody can leave reviews for your site, then please comment back here.
Comment by TDavid — July 25, 2006 @ 12:22 pm PST
Thanks for the great review, TD!

TDavid,
Thanks so much for the excellent and very thourough review. I’m checking into the unability for amazon review. Not sure what the issue is there.
Would you mind if I quoted bits from the letter in a post? When I get a little extra time, I’m going to attempt to make some of the changes you suggest and would like to use snippets in the reveal post.
Thanks so very much,
Comment by thatedeguy — July 26, 2006 @ 1:53 pm PST
Sure, go ahead, thatedeguy
All three of you are welcome to quote from my email review notes however liberally you’d like.
