Despite growing in traffic, Gawker Publishing owned by millionaire Nick Denton which publishes one of my favorite blogs (at a network nonetheless), Lifehacker, has put two of their blogs up for sale and has replaced or reorganized editors at some of their other blogs, according to The New York Times.

NYT: A Blog Mogul Turns Bearish on Blogs

Gawker, Deadspin, a sports site, and Valleywag, a Silicon Valley blog, in particular, have gone beyond cult status with rapacious, real-time annotations. But while newer sites like Jalopnik, an auto-obsessed blog, and Kotaku, a gaming destination, took off, Sploid and Screenhead tanked.

Denton hints that Gawker is readying a new music blog for release later this year. I think some other blog networks could stand similar pruning. Get rid of the blogs that aren’t going anywhere and aren’t being updated or the network will look like (and probably are) ad whores.

My feelings on blog networks being writer sweatshops hasn’t changed. There isn’t a single network out there that doesn’t have more dogs than jewels. Though I’ve soured on the whole we’re in — we’re not in — a bubble talk, Denton believes we’re in a bubble.

If that’s the case, maybe Weblogs Inc selling to AOL was well-timed.
