CNET has ranked the top 10 Google services and missing is search which should have been first on the list (yes/no?). Lists can be debated, but CNET puts Writely at #4 and completely skips Adsense/Adwords and Google News (perhaps some conflict of interest, since CNET serves up news?)? Do people really want important information they are working on being dependent on an internet connection and/or crashing in the browser? Until we are always connected I don’t see web-based wordprocessors gaining any serious traction. Might be something there for sharing documents similar to Google Spreadsheets though. Being #4 though? Not yet.

My Google services top 10 list
In order of most used to least used:

1. Google Search - Microsoft, Yahoo and countless others keep trying to wrestle away the search market, but Google also dominates the traffic market which often gets lost in the discussion. The #1 way to get more webmaster attention is to send them more traffic and I’m still not convinced Microsoft or Yahoo understands and is willing to do this.
2. Google Adwords and Adsense - the de facto advertising standard for small and even some large web advertisers and publishers. Despite others trying to knock them off, Adsense still dominates
3. Gmail - It’s not my primary email client, but it’s a strong second place and useful for signing up for services with tagged emails like yourname+domain at gmail dot com. Some have criticized the concept of ads alongside email, but I think those cries have largely been ignored or treated as a non-issue by Gmail’s userbase.
4. Google News - when they provided RSS feeds they took a useful aggregation service and made it extremely useful.
5. Google Personalize (homepage, search, bookmarks, trends, etc) - some people are concerned about privacy implications here but I find these services worthwhile. If I bookmark and tag something I can go back and find it quickly and easily. Also can see what things I’m searching for so I can relocate recent searches and follow the clicked results. A valuable research and reference tool. I’m sure it has ads (?), but they are so low key I don’t even see or remember them.
6. Google Calendar - even though I criticized web calendars in general during our Google Calendars review, I have warmed up to this service, especially the ability to share calendars with others.
7. Google Talk - I don’t use the standalone app, but I have used it integrated with Gmail and like it
8. Google Co-op - I like the ability to serve up targeted results in XML via subscribed links for those who choose to subscribe. This is a good way to point out pages Google search doesn’t find or have not yet been spidered.
9. Blogger - have had a blog posted on blogspot and one offsite as test for years, although my interest in this service has largely been ruined due to the rampant, although slightly improving splog problems. Listed here more as a reminder that yes, Google does have a blog hosting service.
10. Google Spreadsheets - panned by many critics, but I found it somewhat useful for our VTOR group

Google services I’d like to explore/experience more
Google Sitemaps - one of my goals is to generate more of these for our family of websites and spend some time analyzing the search results to see what visitors are specifically looking for. I suspect this will make the top 10 if I do this again a year from now.
Google Homepage Modules - I created a keno game module early on and I’d like to explore building more
Google extensions for Firefox - others have raved about this Firefox sync extension, it’s high on my to-do list, especially now that Firefox has become my browser of choice.
code.google.com - this area is starting to bulk up and become more useful. I’d like to see them share more code than they have been, but a little is better than nothing.

And you?
What’s your Google top 10? Or do you not even use 10 Google services?

  1. I don’t have a big list myself. I do prefer googlemaps over mapquest and over my last favorite RandMcNally.

I’ve recently come to like google finance over some of the other finance/market sites out there. Its fast loading, and not a Java system hog. The only thing it’s lacking is the realtime changes.

  2. Google Finance is off to a pretty good start. I like how they integrate finance blogs into the company page.

  3. There’s a sitemap plugin for WordPress that makes it easy to keep the sitemap up to date for a blog.

I use Search, Adsense, GTalk, GMail (as a fallback client). I checked out Calendar, and thought it looked pretty sweet, but I haven’t done anything else with it yet.

  4. I forgot to mention Translate — I’ve come to use that over BabelFish lately.

  5. I’ve heard good things mentioned about the Wordpress plugin, which I linked to last week on my Mac blog. Good to have a link to it here, thanks Sterling.

  6. […] Google News (disclaimer: I own GOOG stock), which happens to be my favorite place to check for news headlines, still isn’t running ads. I don’t go to Google News to read any actual news though, just the headlines, and I’m sure if they are counting my clicks on each visit, I’m visiting 3-5 news sources on average for every visit. I also keep track of news by keyword and RSS using Google News. Next to search (#1), Adwords/Adsense (#2) and Gmail (#3), Google News is still my #4 favorite Google service right now (see my top 10 Google products/services list from June 2006) […]

  8. Bill - that’s easy, Google Maps doesn’t do much for me when I’m out and about without internet and need to find a location. I use Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS. Google Maps is better than some other mapping programs but still wouldn’t put it in my top 10.
