50+ English digg clone, digg-type sites

linkdump — by TDavid @ 10:09 am PST

Back in December of last year, we received a trackback from a digg-clone website and was curious if there were other digg clones and software. At the time I’d seen a few, but many more have sprung up in the last six months. With AOL/Netscape now the biggest clone on the block, I thought it would be timely to return to the project and make some sort of formal list. This list isn’t all-inclusive. Criteria used were English-only digg-like sites and preferably those that appeared active and/or had a compelling niche topic/design. There might be a couple to be removed in this list but I came across 50+ to start out with and I’m sure some of you might know others I’m missing to add.

After looking at all of these you’ll start to see that digg-type sites are more like a blog different type of format (like hotornot sites, wikis, blogs, etc), than something proprietary. I can see where it would fit certain types of uses. I pondered about using one for at Hmm someday back in December and am thinking more seriously about it now. I think it would fit a specific need. More on that later if I get really serious on the concept, but anyway, the list below clearly indicates there are more digg-type sites out there than you might think. An asterisk is next to the ones where I’m registered.

  2. What is BizBuzzWire?

BizBuzzWire is a business community news site where small, home, medium-sized business minded individuals and entrepreneurs can submit and share business stories and news with others. It provides avenue to promote businesses at absolutely no cost. The site will also help to bring into spotlight the underserved businesses. The more people read about your business news, stories, articles and press releases, the better visibility your business gets.

The site allows the community rather than a news editor to submit and review news content on the site. Every story on the site that makes it to the front page is due to the users of the site promoting the stories. BizBuzzWire uses a system of self-moderation and management which allows the community to remove bad or broken content.

  4. Most of the sites listed here seem to be based off the same software (Pligg?) and are rarely updated.

What is the real Digg Killer? My new site, Grupl, may fill a critical need for relevant stories. While Digg started out as a site that served up great content, lately it has been filled with “least-common-demoninator” stories, fluff, and fanboy comments. It’s difficult to find an interesting link not related to Apple or the PS3.

That’s where Grupl comes in. Grupl allows users to join as many groups as they want, or even create their own groups. Each of these groups serves as a “mini-digg” with stories centered around the group topic and its own list of ranked stories. The user’s personalized homepage shows all of their groups, and the top stories within each one. Right now, I’m in the Sports, News, Financial, Web 2.0, and Book Club groups… so I see all the relevant links from other users interested in these same things!

This site was built from scratch to focus on the best user experience. It’s not like all the Digg clones: it’s original, useful, and growing! Check it out at: http://www.grupl.com
