Video game detox

gaming — by TDavid @ 6:42 am PST

Sad that people can get addicted to anything in this day and age, but yes, even video games for some can be self-destructive, via breitbart.com:

Bakker already has treated 20 video game addicts, aged 13 to 30, since January. Some show withdrawal symptoms, such as shaking and sweating, when they look at a computer.

Thanks Slashdot, which BTW, I like the snazzy new design.

Update 9:47am PST: Mike from Techdirt isn’t buying it:

Of course, there’s one fairly big problem with this whole thing. Medical research a few years ago showed there’s no such thing as a chemical addiction to video games, and that games are no more addictive than school or work.

  1. Depends on your definition of addiction I suppose. I’m as addicted to videogames as I am with say… some people with football. It’s sucks if I miss something,or haven’t played or what not, but like every other hobby/fandom, if you can’t manage your time, everything is “bad” for you. Heck if you can drink yourself to death, you can game yourself to death (like that 20 some year old Korean that didn’t eat for like three-four days at an Internet cafe).

In the end, it’s a matter of responsibility. I don’t think there is one thing on this earth that couldn’t do you harm if you overdid it. Well… maybe a couple…no wait, mind out of gutter! Not one thing!

  2. It’s easy to get addicted to video games, especially online video games. Online games, including MMORPGs, can really replace a person’s social life by placing their lives in a virtual environment.

People need to learn how to schedule in and space out time better. Video game addiction is a serious problem that can lead to serious health issues, let alone social issues.

I was addicted to an MMORPG game (FFXI) for a whole summer during high school, and that was BAD. I had no friends, barely went out, and played all day and night. I think I got fat from the addiction as well.

Thankfully money overpowered my addiction to play and I sold my game account. :P
