Starship Troopers on UMDStarship Troopers (ST, 1997) [IMDB] is one of my favorite sci-fi movies and is the only UMD we have purchased to date for the PSP (although I’m sure we’ll pick up more once they get into bargain bin mode). Since it didn’t do so hot in theaters the sequel went straight to DVD. We bought the sequel too, but I didn’t care for that one nearly much. Must have not done that badly sales-wise, because the rumor is now there will be a third ST.

# After shoving out a direct-to-dvd sequel, the folks behind Starship Troopers are now looking to produce a third installment of the cult hit. However, this time they want to go back to where it all began and, not only create a film much like the first, but also use some of the original talent. Yes folks, Casper Van Dien said he’s involved and will be reprising the role of Johnny Rico.

And Johnny Rico as a general, nonetheless.

Let’s hope the budget is a little bit higher than it was for the last film. I think that was the single biggest problem that for a movie of this type, special effects and gore were an key ingredient. Got to have more alien bugs getting splattered. And somebody get veteran director Paul Verhoeven to throw in another gratuituous nude bathroom scene. Wouldn’t hurt to use another Robert Heinlein novel either for at least some of the backstory, if one exists anyway.

  1. While it would be nice to have a bit more backstory using one of Robert A. Heinlein’s books, that is sadly not going to happen either now or in the future, being as Mr. Heinlein died in 1989. I’ve read all of his books except for maybe 3, and starship troopers was one of my favorites. Not quite as bloody as the movie was, but Heinlein never really wrote bloody books. Starship troopers was a bit more political than anything, but it had enough action in it to keep me hooked. The movie was good, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, even though at first I was skeptical, i mean, come on, the main character in the book wasn’t anywhere near looking like casper van dien…hell the book character’s name was Juanito Rico. And then Dizzy…umm, well I won’t go much into that one because while the girl who played Dizzy is hot….in the book dizzy is a guy, and of course dizzy and rico didn’t do anything like that. Oh well, I still enjoyed the movie even with the changing of character’s gender and ethnicity, so I guess I can’t complain.

  2. I Loved Starship Troopers!!! :P it was the best! starship Troopers 2 was OK i guess but it was cheesy and Why did they add that dumb ass bug that goes inside your body and controls you? its Stupid! they had none of the giant termite things though witch sux cause they were awesome, and there were no more flying bugs and those things rocked!!!
but what really sucked was that they had nothing to do with the brain bug or Rico, ace, and Carmen. Why did they use the same actress as the captain in the first as a character in the second???? i only liked the bugs getting electrocuted, the sandstorm, and the guy with the glasses dying! the second one sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i want a third movie to come out to cover up the trillions of mistakes the third movie had made.

  6. Man not even eragon is like the book in fact it is the furthest from the book than any other movie i’ve seen. man i’m gonna miss the days when starship troopers wasn’t a crappy way to make a few bucks by using horrible animation and crappy sound affects along with the use of new terrible looking armor in the new crap filled seriese of the roughnecks!!! whoever came up with that idea must have an I Q of 25 or lower!
