Sony not to allow pre-owned PS3 games sales? |
Sony has really been abusing itself in the marketplace the last year or so.
They were bagged for hiding a rootkit in some CDs, they’ve been playing a neverending game of cat and mouse with PSP homebrew developers, the PS3 was seen by many as too expensive at E3 and now the news that they might try to ban the sale of preowned PS3 games?:
It seems that Sony is planning to adopt a licensing system that will mean gamers won’t own the PS3 titles that they’ve paid money for. Instead, they will only be purchasing the licence to play the game and that the software itself will still be Sony property - meaning that the disc won’t be the customer’s to sell.
How appropriate that a Hmm reader named darkmoon would first tip me off to this (linked on the image below). Sony is living on the dark side of the moon lately and I don’t mean that in a good Floydesque type of way.
As an avid gamer and have owned all of the Sony consoles (PS, PS2, PSP), this will drastically reduce my love for Sony … What a drag. We hope that Sony wakes up and smells reality soon, since this will definitely put a stopper on Sony’s dominance of the gaming market.
I hear you, darkmoon. This rumour has to be a joke, yes? Sony can’t be this stupid, can they? The paragraph that follows assumes the worst.
I don’t understand what’s going on with Sony and their arrogant, overprotective, self-destructive company moves but somebody needs to pump some high-powered weed into the corporate air ducts and mellow these folks out. If it’s the lawyers, then they should all be fired. Clean house. Quickly. Now.
With a few possible exceptions, I’m not seeing many other companies this size or larger continually hosing themselves the way Sony seems to be. Pull it together guys. Hurry before it’s game over. They have to be laughing in Redmond. Loudly.

There are many people dispelling the rumor, but Sony hasn’t come out and said anything. I’m curious if their music department has gotten a hold of their gaming and trying to become the RIAA of games. Hopefully they come out against this, but I’m worried that they won’t.

This would be a disaster for Sony.
I imagine it’s all being blown out of proportion and that no game system would even think about doing something like this…but who knows.
I’ll bet Gamestop/Ebgames is ready to call a hit on the exec who is proposing this disastrous concept.

It’s that “who knows” parts that scares me.
Like TDavid said, they didn’t even blink an eye when the rootkit thing went down, and with the current bad press with the pricing of the PS3 (which is actually decent with the Blu-ray drive, but they don’t give you an option of not having one) and the usual RIAA stuff, you can’t help but wonder.
I particularly like the way the PSP is going right now, as far as the gaming selections. But PS3.. man..

I’m showing my age here, but this sounds like Beta video tapes all over again. Didn’t they learn their lesson yet?

Sony wants to ban us from selling preowned games, cause we usually sell the ones that are too short and/or not worth purchasing in the first place. So instead of putting out quality games, they are just gonna keep sending us garbage, that we arent allowed to get rid of. Maybe we should try to ban the sale of japanese products in EU and US.
Also if they want to ban the sale of preowned games, will they also ban rentals?

[…] Sony has been taking a steady flow of criticism from gamers and videogame pundits over PS3 system and game pricing and the possibility of trying to stamp out the resale market, but it is really saying something when videogame legends like Jeff Minter (”Yak”) of Llamasoft start criticizing them. Rumors have suggested that some games may cost as much as $100. They should dial up SNK long before November and ask them about the Neo Geo. Great system, great games, too expensive. We don’t even know yet if the PS3 games will be great, but we do know it will have a Blu-ray drive built-in. Last night I checked out a local retail store shelf and there were two small rows of Blu-ray movies and three small rows of HD-DVD. I can’t see many gamers buying the system to play movies. […]

Because of this about pre-owned games i am thinking of getting a 360 after loyal years with sony. Plus gears of war is the greatest game ever.

Technically this could be a good thing fellas! If we buy the right to PLAY a game, but not technically own the media, then the Prices should be $30CHEAPER. If I cant let a friend borrow a game, or I cant leverage it in a pawn to pay bills, it technically isnt worth keeping on the shelf. The Blackmarket is finally going to BOOM, with Players selling thier games to eachother as opposed to selling them at stores for less than thier worth. Truly, now that most european and american Games are more playable than a lot of slop from other foreign markets , The Xbox may very well thrive until PS3 is about 150 dollars, and subsequently becomes what the Old XBOX used to be. a powerful Lunchbox with a lot of games. Suppport your XBOX, becaus that is the last hope of maintaining our traditional way of Gaming Life. Now, about Gears 4-player Splitcreen……
