Film Affinity recommendations engine

customer adventures, movies — by TDavid @ 4:33 pm PST

Ever since dropping TiVO, I’ve been on the hunt for a comparable recommendation engine. Today I came across Film Affinity which seeks to fill this void. After registering and entering in ratings on at least 10 movies, you can then choose “movie soulmates” link along the left to be shown a list of users that match you:

The first thing I noticed from the list that there was only 1 soultmate from the USA, the rest were all from other countries. I clicked on the #1 result and many of the top rated movies I hadn’t seen. Off to a decent start. I kept rating. And rating.

There is good use of javascript so that your ratings can occur quickly on page without having to refresh the whole page. I went through the top couple soulmates and rated every movie I had seen in the list.

Didn’t take long to get to 100 ratings where I started populating a wish list for Hollywood Video so I can begin to see if the movies it thinks I might like, I will actually like. Will have to report back on this one. Anybody else using Film Affinity? Accurate/inaccurate? I like the interface.

Did this post make you go hmm?

  1. Sounds pretty interesting, if I ever watched enough movies. Home and box office combined I bet I don’t exceed 10 movies a year.

  2. 10 movies a year?! Wow, we’ve rented more than that in the last week. What do you do with all that extra R&R time, Sterling?

  3. Watching baseball consumes most of it. We have the DirecTV MLB extra innings, so between following the Mariners and the Yankees (and keeping an eye on the Giants recently) that covers about all the time we aren’t taking care of the kids.

  4. The best recommendation engine is on trustedopinion.com. You can do lot’s of stuff with it, but generally it helps to choose what is really cool (only by you circle of friends - those people whom you can trust completely). Check it out for yourself!

  5. Kind of hard to check that out without an invitation from a current member, see: “We are delighted that you wish to participate in this exciting new way to share honest, commercially untainted recommendations and opinions. To preserve the integrity of the service, membership in Trusted Opinion is reserved only for those who have received invitations from current members.”

Anybody got an invite they want to send me? Send to tdavid+trustedopinion at gmail dot com.

  7. I’ve been using Film Affinity and it seems to be well executed. Needed something to help me pick movies for a couple of rental services I use (their recommendation engines are universally awful, intentionally I think). FA seems to be very popular in Spain, so if I keep using their recommendations I’ll probably see the entire Pedro Almodovar catolog (not such a bad thing, though).

I’d love to check out Trusted Opinion if anyone has an invite.
