More potential Blu-Ray gotchas

Xbox 360, gadgets, movies, gaming — by TDavid @ 12:28 pm PST

The more I read about Blu-Ray, the more compelling HD-DVD sounds. It’s possible the Xbox 360 with HD-DVD player will be less than the PS3 and both Microsoft and Sony are telling people they should “also” buy a Nintendo Wii. Ouch.

via digg:

To access the advanced features or transfer your movies over a home network, you’ll need to connect your blu-ray player to the internet. If the provider doesn’t like what the player reports about your content, they can permanently destroy your player remotely. Of course, they haven’t activated this feature.. yet.

If Blu-Ray actually does have some sort of self-destruct trigger for hardware as this article suggests, who is going to buy hardware with this function enabled? What is it with Sony and backdoor crap anyway?

Hopefully this isn’t just FUD, but I’m seriously starting to think against buying electronics that start with S and end with Y.

Did this post make you go hmm?

  2. Well, keep in mind that the article referenced from that post is from August of 2005. So many things have changed since then so you can’t take this as final truth.
BOTH HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will use AACS and Blu-Ray is testing some copy protection tools as a way of easing the hesitance of the studios who are afraid that once High Def versions of films are able to be copied then no one will ever buy a store copy again.
It’s all a waiting game to see what happens. Things change…HD-DVD decided not to restrict output to HDMI at the last minute. Sony just changed the boomerang controller on the PS3 back to something we are all used to.
Until both formats are out and the final reviews are in, I plan to wait.
No use dropping $500+ on a player that I won’t be able to buy new movies for in 2 years.
I have a feeling that both formats will end up a disappointment in the long run and something better will be developed.
