Movielink offers a few new online movies at $15.99, still too expensive

Just received this email from Movielink:

Guess people complaining about the unrealistically high new movie download prices forced Movielink’s hands? Umm, not so fast. These problems still remain:

- Movielink site still doesn’t work with Firefox (unless you use the ActiveX plugin maybe?), which means if I link to them, you’ll first be prompted to use IE and second be prompted (if using IE7 anyway) to turn on ActiveX just to be able to view the store page. Why?
- three computer only DRM and movies won’t play in regular DVD player
- The Cave is still $25.99 when it can be found as cheap as $9.99 in retail stores. Big Momma’s House 2? $26.99. Grandma’s Boy, which we just saw last night as part of our Hollywood rental plan is going for $26.35. Rumor Has It which we also saw recently is going for $27.99

A download to own movie service could work if the prices are better than what people pay for the DVD in the stores. They are going to have a real rough time getting people to spend as much as two to three times the cost of buying the DVD and with more strings attached.

Fine, you want to jam DRM, then charge us $9.99 or less. They might have a chance at $9.99. Will we see these prices online (legally anyway)?

No word on Cinemanow reducing any of their prices. Back to the drawing pricing board, Movielink.

Movies can be burned to a single DVD and played on up to two computers. This is encouraging and much better than Movielink and Cinemanow. Maybe by the time iTunes starts selling movies we’ll see all prices for digital downloads at or below $9.99. I still can’t see most netizens — and probably less than 1% of the savvy netizens — dropping more than $9.99 for a restricted movie file. Most will continue renting or going out and buying the DVD. - Glad that I missed out on the unsolicited mail for Marc Canter’s new global social network service.
