This post conjures up a radio interview I heard on the Jim Rome show on July 23, 2003. Looks like Sly’s dreams are coming true. Last October, I suggested we discuss ideas for Rocky 7 and beyond but there were no takers. Guess Hmm readers aren’t that jazzed about seeing more of the original Rock.

At the Rocky Balboa blog there is a short video of Rocky walking down the tunnel with Uncle Pauly (thanks Cinematical) on his way to the big fight with Mason “The Line” Dixon.

The IMDB credits list Yo’ Adrian (Talia Shire) as merely “archive footage.” Adrian is not in the film? Has Rocky lost his wife through the hard times too? I’m curious how the whole Rocky has brain damage stuff will be handled and how on earth he would be able to get a boxing license? Perhaps in some way off foreign land where these kind of medical details don’t matter?

And if Adrian has been killed off — say it isn’t so, Rock — then what are we left with? Rock’s son and Uncle Pauly? Where is Apollo’s trainer, Duke? (who didn’t make the Rocky 5 cut either) Another casualty?

Rocky Balboa

I realize that Stallone wants to tell a serious story about a puncher’s chance, but the Rocky franchise has a lot of history — and baggage — to deal with dramatically. I’m not sure this film will work because of that history. Maybe it should be described as the screenwriter’s chance? Also, audiences have a limited threshold for killing off or skipping over important characters. The first Rocky film was more than a boxing film, it was a love story. And please Stallone, don’t tell us the love story comes for your son in this film or [gasp] Uncle Pauly. I will see this film when it comes out, I’m curious how Stallone is going to handle the history but in the back of my brain I keep hearing the crusty venerable trainer Mick saying: “You can’t win, Rock!”

From better days. Rocky III with Clubber Lang (Mr. T). Much better days for the franchise. I could be wrong on this one and it could magically take us back. Will you be seeing this movie in the theater, waiting for DVD, both or neither?

  1. I’ll be waiting for the DVD. I love the Rocky movies…of course the first one being the best. I thought it was so much more than a boxing story or a love story. But, when the last Rocky film came out, I knew the series had lost its magic. I can’t imagine what this next movie will be like. I have a feeling only one word might describe it: Pain. :)

  2. I will go see this movie when it comes out just out of sheer morbid curiosity. I’m a huge fan of the franchise. Whenever one of those movies come on TNT I find myself suctioned to the couch and watching them yet again. Of course, my girlfriend ends up
being disgusted for a couple of hours over it. I am a bit worried how this will play out though. It looks as if Adrian is killed off thus explaining the “Lonely retired boxer” bit described in the movie description. It could work though because Good
lord SLy is almost 60 (Probably will be 60 by the time the movie comes out) and it only stands to reason that Adrian may be gone. I think her character was older than Rocky and Rocky (I assume) is as old as Sly himself. We’ll see. I’m sure the
film will be entertaining. If nothing else, It’ll give TNT something new to replay over and over again in the future.

  3. Yea, but you have to admit Sly is in good shape for an older guy—despite him being eligible for a senior discount. He still hasn’t lost the ‘yum’ factor :) okay, yes, I’m done now…..

  4. Sly is definitely in good shape, Janine, same with Arnie. Props well earned there. If only the Rocky franchise would have aged as well …

  5. If you have seen the trailer and know anything about the series, you will see that this is definitely one to catch at the theater. The buzz on the Stallone boards are all abuzz waiting for this movie. I would venture to say that it is going to be as good as the first one.

  6. Stallone himself has said that this would be the last one and that he is doing it because he didn’t like how the 5th one came across. Interview on Howard Stern (I think)

  7. fan of 30 years - I have seen the trailer and it looks ok. As for Stallone saying there won’t be another one? Maybe he won’t be part of making one, but if they can keep making money on the franchise you can bet they will. How many Friday the 13th have there been?

And Rocky lost its edge after Rocky III, not V.

  8. fan of 30 years….I’ve seen the trailer too. Actually the more time goes by, the more excited I am about this movie’s release. And I’m right there with you…fan of 30 years. I sometimes just don’t like admitting the ‘how many years’ thing. :) Just doesn’t seem like it’s been that long.

  10. Their will be no more Rocky movies if Stallone isn’t a part of them… he owns the rights (I think)… but no matter, Sly is the only one who could play Rocky (as far as his fans are concerned), any further production without him would not fare as well. I do agree that the franchise became a bit lackluster after the third one (2nd even) but the training sequence in the forth was good. I am so excited and I truly believe that from what I’ve seen, heard, and read about the upcoming installment, all the Rocky fans and any with an open mind to movie, will be impressed by Sly’s creation.

  11. Yeah, I liked the training montage and soundtrack for Rocky IV too, fan of 30 years. I wonder if Sly will hook up with the band Survivor again for Rocky VI? Survivor has a new CD this year called Reach. He didn’t use Survivor in Rocky V, but used them in III and IV.

  12. there is rumor of survivor returning for 6 but I haven’t heard anything definite….

  14. I will be going to see the film at the pictures and also getting it on DVD when it comes out and it was only the 1st and maybe 2nd that was a love story and the other 3 hardly had his wife Adrian in the films.

  15. Both Sly and Talia (Adrian) discussed the film prior to production and until the final rewrite, she was going to be in it, but they both agreed that her death was the only thing that would give him the real sense of loss and need to fight. That is the only reason she isn’t in it. They both also said that the memory of her is so prevalent in the film, it is almost as though she is there anyway.

  17. I watched the movie and tell ya guys it is really touching….but i really wonder if there could be another one to add up…The history in the film was captured all fine and Sly is as good as ever.. It would have been a nice thing to see Sly trying to get his son motivated in being the next rocko!!! please comment

    Comment by Tazz — February 19, 2007 @ 1:34 am PST

  18. Tazz, I have to say that I would follow Rocky for however many sequels there were, but I am pleased and happy with this one being the last installment. There could never be another “Rocky” as Sly is “Rocky”. This last movie had all the heart and tenderness of the original and I think it would be better left right there.

  24. hi,

i liked all movies alot. in every movie there was something special.
in no. 5 i cried when he started street fightin because he gave everything he had and tommy gunn (tommy morrison) broke it, know what i mean? in 6 i liked that talk with robert (milo) i learned alot from it: it ain’t about how hard you hit it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep movin forward, that’s how winning is done! if you know what you’re worth go out there and get what you’re but you’ve to be willing to take the hits. haha that’s what i learned so i want to thank rocky ( sylvester stallone)

love ya rocko xxxxxxxxxxxxx and greetzzz from holland
