Vista requirements say 512MB RAM and 1280×1024 for glass |
Been wondering when Vista Capable Hardware Guidelines would be linked up somewhere and this morning thanks to Bugblog the moment finally arrived.
I’ve been reading 1GB RAM would be required but the minimum requirements say 512MB. I am running more than 512MB RAM on my Tablet PC (1GB) and main workstation. Most of our others have 512MB or less. Not a Vista story, but my eMac is starting to grow long in the tooth with 256MB RAM and no superdrive. Although I do have an external firewire DVD burner for the Mac. I can see an Intel based Mac in the future, perhaps 2007 and something that would dual boot to Vista will be a purchasing concern there.
Still need to fix my Tablet PC I/O board (a “couple hundred dollars” according to Motion support) and then that will be Vista ready, I think. The graphics card is pretty good, although the resolution is 1024×768 so does that mean it won’t work with glass?
All in all, it looks like I may only need to purchase a little more memory to be Vista compliant on some of our machines and a couple graphics cards. A little while back I polled readers for how much RAM you were using and got a somewhat decent response.
As I write this I wonder if we aren’t still a good year away from the Vista reality, but what will you need to do to get Vista ready? And how many machines do you plan to upgrade?

I’m starting to have my doubts about using Vista for “my” workstation. Starting to lean Linuxward. Obviously, I’ll have to install Vista someplace, because my customers will want to use it. For that, I’ll probably just need an upgraded video card (currently NVIDIA GeForce with only 32MB is my high end!). I’ll probably install it on at least one real system, and create a couple of virtual machines with it for testing various configurations.

Frankly, I consider 512MB bare minimum for XP, so it stands to reason that 1GB is the practical amount you’d want for Vista.
I’m an IT support guy and all-around PC nut, so sure, I’m excited about anything new coming down the road. However…
Even despite how much of a Windows zealot I am, I’ve really seen very little about Vista that merits getting worked up about. Oh sure, like any good Summer blockbuster movie, it has eye candy a-plenty, but that seems like about all there is to it - the majority of the new stuff Microsoft is touting as revolutionary is all fluff, little substance. The meat and underlying bones just don’t seem like much of a departure from XP. Since XP works great and is stable as a rock for me, I’m in no rush to jump ship…
For me, Vista begs the question, “What is it that your current OS *isn’t* doing for you?
