Fans of the original Star Wars are going to get the original theater treatment this September: for only three short months, so start saving your pennies. No land speeder splurging. No breakfast with the Wookies. I’ll be there. Thanks to my wife, I now have Spudtrooper which will go nicely with Darth Tater.

Back to the DVD release. This means all the Han Solo shot Greedo first purists will finally be sated. Cinematical has an update on the TV series where the writers may not yet have been hired and which refutes somewhat the possibility that it will focus on Luke Skywalker’s early years.

Star Wars TV to focus on Boba Fett?

Okay seriously, what the heck is with the crazy bounter hunter and Boba Fett fetish (Boba Fettish?) among Star Wars fans? Dude was in a few moments of the original trilogy and got killed* by a blind guy. How a man that inept turned into a the greatest bounty hunter of all time in the collective minds’ of SW fans I’ll surely never understand. Don’t get me wrong, fans, I think he’s a fun character — I just can’t figure out why.

The allure with Boba is that he wasn’t in the flick so much, but I chuckled, Mark. Of all the characters to spend time with the bounty hunter’s adventures leads better to serialization than how is Luke going to avoid the sand people and jawas, what did Aunt Perue make for dinner and why is Uncle Owen such a crotchety farmer.

  1. good news indeed - of course I have at least 4 different versions of the trilogy on laserdisc alone….haven’t really cracked open my DVD version yet, and already, a new one is oncoming…

  2. Cool, a fellow Laserdisc guy! We have the Twilight Zone on laserdisc. Our Laserdisc player hasn’t been used in awhile, so not sure how good it works any more. I really liked laserdiscs but they never really caught on like VHS or DVDs. The size and expense of some of them must have been the problem. A collection of those was like having an album collection: heavy and space hogging.

  3. yeah - I am bummed, my player has been down for a couple of years, and I got another player off Ebay within the past month, that showed up, and does not work.

I’ve expanded my collection within the past few years via Ebay, and it’s nice to stock up on a good number of discs that I wanted back in the day, but didn’t get for one expensive reason or another - I enjoyed music videos in particular, and have a number that are still not on DVD.

You are right, price and size were definitely part of the problem with laserdisc, but I thought it was a great format.

If you ever dump your laser collection, drop me a line…haha! I actually just took a buddy of mine’s collection off his hands when I was in NYC recently:-)

  4. Lucas is definitely doing this now much more for his wallet than for the fans .. that said, this is still the ultimate DVD release for this year, and I’ll definitely buy in!

  6. […] As mentioned back in May and in case you missed it — and no self-respecting Star Wars junkies would — on Tuesday George Lucas found yet another creative way to get into our wallets anew: by releasing the limited edition original theatrical version of Star Wars IV, V and VI. Only available for a mere three months and then back to the vaults. Hopefully not for another 20+ years. And while at it, don’t forget the Star Wars II LEGO game for the Xbox 360, although that isn’t a limited edition. […]
